CLERMONT, Fla. – The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (8-13) wrapped up their Florida spring trip with a pair of wins against Pace (N.Y.) (5-5) by a score of 8-1 and Hillsdale (Mich.) (10-13) by a close score of 5-4. Concordia has now won three straight games.
Concordia-St. Paul 8, Pace (N.Y.) 1
CSP scored seven combined runs in the two innings to jump to a big lead against the Setters and never looked back.
The Golden Bears first two runs came off throwing errors by Pace. Following a single and double putting runners on second and third, Liz Jarosz would rip a double to left field scoring the runners and giving CSP a 4-0 lead. Following a sacrifice bunt to move Jarosz over to third Sarah Kivisto would single to right field scoring Jarosz building the Concordia lead to 5-0 after the first inning.
In the second inning with two outs Justine Schattner would record her second single of the game before Haley Schanks belted a 2-run home run to left field building the Golden Bears lead to 7-0 after two innings of play.
Pace would record their only run of the game in the top of the third. With two outs and runners on second third Larissa Labs would single to left scoring the runner on third to make it a 7-1 game. The Setters would only compile two hits in the final four innings.
Concordia would score their eighth and final run of the game in the sixth inning off a solo home run by Lauren Bartel to right center giving CSP a 8-1 lead. The home run is Bartel's first of her career.
Samantha Sullivan (4-5) took the win for the Golden Bears as she went the distance allowing only six hits, one run while striking out two.
Seven different players recorded a hit for Concordia as Carlie Hart, Schattner and Jarosz all finished with two hits. Haley Schanks led all batters going a perfect 3-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs. Jarosz also added two RBI for CSP.
Five players recorded a hit for Pace led by Haley Hernandez who went 2-4 at the plate.
Concordia-St. Paul 5, Hillsdale 4
The Golden Bears avenged their loss to Hillsdale (Mich.) two days ago by defeating the Chargers 5-4 coming from behind.
Hillsdale jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after Concordia stranded two runners on base and one in scoring position. HC would get their first run of the game off a fielding error to jump ahead 1-0. Following a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third, Victoria Addis would reach first on a fielder's choice as Katie Kish would score from third giving the Chargers a 2-0 lead. CSP attempted to get Kish out at home but the tag came up short.
The Hillsdale lead would not last long as the Golden Bears would record three straight singles with one out to load the bases before
Carlie Hart drove a double to right field scoring two to tie the game and putting runners on second and third.
Nicole Thompson would follow by grounding out to the shortstop but scoring
Lily Langevin from third to give CSP the 3-2 lead.
In the home half of the second, HC would tie the game at three thanks to a RBI double to left field Gockman with two outs.
In the top of the third, Concordia had a chance to regain the lead as
Haley Schanks led off with a double and then advance to third on a wild pitch, but the Chargers got out of the jam with three straight outs stranding Schanks on third.
The Chargers would regain the lead in the bottom of the third after a throwing error by Concordia allowed Addis to score from second giving HC a 4-3 lead.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning, the chance for a CSP comeback was becoming smaller and smaller that was until the Golden Bears loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth.
Nicole Thompson would ground out to second but
Sarah Kivisto was able to score from third to tie the game at four heading into the final inning of play.
In the seventh it was
Liz Jarosz who came up big yet again as she crushed a solo home run to left to give Concordia a 5-4 lead. The Chargers were unable to complete a second walk-off against CSP as they went down in order in the bottom of the seventh.
Linzy Heim (4-6) took the win for the Golden Bears as she went the distance while allowing eight hits, four runs (two earned) and striking out three.
For the second straight game seven different batters recorded a hit. Hart, Schattner, and Kivisto all finished with two hits as Langevin went a perfect 3-3 at the plate. Hart and Thompson each tallied two RBI on the afternoon.
For the Chargers their first six batters recorded at least one hit while Bakah Kastning and Victoria Addis each finished with a pair of hits.
Concordia has a week off before beginning conference play on Tuesday, March 28 at Minnesota State with first pitch of game one scheduled for 2 pm.
