CLERMONT, Fla. – The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (4-12) resumed play on Thursday morning after a day and fell to Hillsdale College (Mich.) (8-10) by a score of 9-8 off a walk-off RBI single.
The Golden Bears complied 20 hits in the loss and seven different players recorded two or more hits. Hillsdale finished the game with 13 hits. The 20 hits ranks third all-time in program history for a single game.
Hillsdale had a great opportunity to jump out to an early lead in the first as they loaded the bases thanks to a pair of a walks and fielding error with only one out. However, the pitching of Sullivan and defense of Concordia prevented any runs scored as the Golden Bears got out of the jam.
In the second, CSP's offense came alive as the compiled three runs and six hits. Liz Jarosz led off with a single and then Elena Koncar would drive her home with a RBI double. Emily Shinn would follow with a single moving Koncar over to third still with one out. Carlie Hart would continue would wrap up the scoring for Concordia in the inning as she drove home Shinn and Koncar with a RBI double giving the Golden Bears a 3-0 lead.
The Chargers would add a run of their own in the home half of the second thanks to a RBI single to right field by Bekah Kastning cutting the CSP lead to 3-1. HC would compile three hits in the inning and strand a runner in scoring position.
The Golden Bears would continue their offensive prowess in the top of the third as they added brought home two more runs to give them a 5-1 lead. With a runner on third and two outs Koncar would come up big again as she drove a liner to left-center scoring Jarosz from third. Shinn would follow with a RBI double scoring Koncar from first.
CSP would load the bases following a walk and bunt single, but could not bring home anymore runs before the third out was recorded on a fielder's choice.
The Chargers offense continue in the third as well as they added two more runs to cut the CSP lead to 5-3. After a walk to lead off the inning a double by Cassie Asselta put runners on second and third with no outs. The following at bat Victoria Addis would bring home Gockman from third and move Asselta over to third with a RBI single.
Asselta would then score and Addis would advance to second on the wild pitch the following at bat. HC would eventually load the bases but was only able to bring home one run thanks to a RBI single by Kastning with two outs. Sullivan would get out of the jam with an infield popup to end the inning with Concordia still out in front 5-4.
The Golden Bears would build their lead back up to three thanks to a RBI double by
Sarah Kivisto scoring
Hannah Carlson and
Haley Schanks from first and second, respectively.
HC would not go away as they added three more runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at seven. Gockman led off with a double to right center before Asselta drove her home with a RBI double to left center. Carley Gouge would come in to pinch run for Asselta and would then score on a fielding error the following at bat to make it a one run game with a runner on second.
After a groundout moved Addis to third, another infield groundout would score Addis from third to up the game heading into the fifth inning.
The tie game would not last long as Concordia would regain the lead in the top of the fifth thanks to a RBI double by
Justine Schattner giving CSP a 8-7 lead.
However, the lead would not last long as the Chargers would tie the game up yet again in the bottom of the sixth with a two out RBI double by Sydney San Juan.
Heading into the seventh with the game tied Schattner would record a one out double and then Carlson would hit a two out single and Schattner would try to score but was thrown out at home for the final out.
In the home half of the seventh following a strike out, Gockman would hit a double for Hillsdale to put in her scoring position. The following at bat Cassie Asselta would rip a single to center field, deep enough for Gockman to score from second and win the game for HC 9-8.
Haley Schanks (0-1) took the tough loss for CSP after coming in to relieve starting pitcher
Samantha Sullivan. Schanks went three and a third, allowing five hits, three runs, and striking out a pair.
Carlie Hart,
Nicole Thompson,
Elena Koncar and
Justine Schattner all finished with three hits for CSP while combining for five RBI and three runs scored. Hart, Koncar and
Sarah Kivisto all finished with two RBI for the game.
Nine different batters recorded a hit for Hillsdale led by Cassie Asselta who went a perfect 3-3 at the plate with two RBI, including the game winner.
CSP is back in action right away this morning as they take on Clarion (Pa.) shortly after the conclusion of this game.
