Slow start costs Golden Bears in loss to Findlay

Boyce collects fourth-straight hat trick to lead offensive attack

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team (2-2) dropped a 15-6 decision to Findlay (1-1) on Sunday afternoon at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium in the final game of the five game Sea Foam Festival over the weekend.

Concordia will now hit the road for the first time, embarking on a seven game road swing through four states. Next weekend, CSP will head to Rockhurst in the Kansas City, Missouri area on Friday, McKendree (Ill.) in the St. Louis area on Sunday before hitting Michigan's Upper Peninsula to face Northern Michigan on Tuesday, March 7. The team then heads to Florida for its spring trip against four programs in the Sunshine State.

Findlay returning leading goal scorer Kyra Bradley scored 18 seconds into play as the Oilers scored the first seven goals in the opening 11:32 of play. Bradley had 55 goals a year ago and scored a game-high five today and eight for the Oilers' opening weekend.

Concordia came back strong, however as freshman Alina Boyce scored the first of three first half goals to put Concordia on the board nearing the midway point of the half on a free position shot. She was set up by freshman Maddie Hentges for her second goal to narrow the margin to 8-2 and scored unassisted  to make it 9-3.

Boyce's third goal came gives her 13 on the year and came with plenty of time to play in the first half, a turning point for the Golden Bears' comeback attempt. Concordia's defense clamped down on Findlay, shutting out the Oilers for over 22 and a half minutes of game time between the end of the first and start of the second half.

But Boyce's third goal at the 10:39 mark of the first half was the only goal Concordia's offense would muster during the shutout run by the Bears. Findlay would score three goals within a four minute window in the second half to put the game out of reach at 12-3 with just over 15 minutes to play.

Freshman Kailey Heinl scored a pair of late second half goals and junior Kallie LaValle added her fourth goal of the year with just over a minute left on a free position shot to round out CSP's scoring. Heinl's first goal was assisted by freshman Kaci Reid, her fourth assist of the year.

Heinl has now scored 10 goals to give CSP a pair of offensive forces to reach double-digits through four games.

While Bradley was the high goal scorer, she added an assist for a six point day while teammate Ciara Burud had two goals and three assists for a five point game for the Oilers.

After being out-shot 16-8 in the first half, Concordia held strong with Findlay in the second as the Oilers had a 13-12 edge and finished the game with a 29-20 shot margin. The ground ball margin went to Concordia by just one, 25-24 while turnovers went the other way by the same number in favor of Findlay.

Findlay's biggest advantage of the game came on clears, finishing the game 19-22 and a perfect 11-11 in the second half. Concordia's clears were sound in the second half as well, producing at an 8-10 clip after a more sluggish 6-10 start in the first half.

Freshman goalie Katie Lottsfeldt added eight saves to her total in the losing effort, falling to 2-2 in the net for CSP. She's held up for the Bears while facing 87 shots through four games to start the year and leads the team with 26 ground balls.

Through four games, the Golden Bears hold a 53-44 scoring margin, 127-105 ground ball edge, lead 60-43 on the draw and have fewer turnovers by a slim 100-102 margin. Boyce leads the team with 15 points (13g, 2a) and Heinl is second with 11 (10g, 1a) while Hentges is closing in on double-digit points with nine (6g, 3a).

Following Lottsfeldt in ground balls is freshman Cassidy Leininger with 15 and freshman Brooke Genzler with 12 while three others have 11. On the draw, Heinl and Genzler pace CSP with 14 draw controls followed by LaValle with 12. Genzler leads the team with 15 caused turnovers with sophomore Sheala Osborne adding 13 and Heinl 10.
