BENTONVILLE, Ark. – The Concordia Golden Bears softball team (1-7) had a tough second game on day two of the 8 State Classic falling to Northeastern State 12-2 in five innings Saturday afternoon.
Northeastern State 12, Concordia-St. Paul 2 (5 innings)
The Riverhawks exploded for nine runs over the first three innings to put the game out of reach. NSU posted three runs in the top of the first, five in the second, and one in the third to jump out to an early 9-0 lead. They collected 11 hits, including three-run homer and a solo home run, in those three innings.
Concordia did manage to produce four hits in the first four innings and get a runner in scoring position but were unable to score a run and trim their deficit.
NSU would add three more runs in the top of the fifth after they loaded the bases with no outs. A fielder's choice, ground out and single all produced runs for the Riverhawks.
The Golden Bears were able to produce their only two runs of the game in the home half of the fifth.
Lily Langevin came away with a two out single and then
Justine Schattner hammered her second home run of the season.
The team was held to just six hits by NSU starter Sylver Collins (4-1), who went the distance.
Samantha Sullivan (0-4) took to the tough loss for CSP as she went three innings, allowing 11 hits and nine runs while striking out a pair.
Schattner finished the game 2-3 at the plate with a single and a home run. Langevin was also successful at the plate going a perfect 2-2 and scoring a run.
Nicole Thompson and
Hannah Carlson each produced a hit in the loss.
Nine different players recorded at least one hit for Northeastern State and four different players produced a pair of hits.
Haley Acrey went 2-4 at the plate, with two RBI and a run scored. Paige Gann finished 2-3 at the plate also with a pair of runs scored and four RBI. Gann and Acrey each also finished with a home run.
Concordia will continue action on Sunday as they face Drury University at 9 am and Ouachita Baptist at 1 p.m. to wrap up the 8 State Classic.
