ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse (2-0) secured a 10-8 victory on Sunday afternoon over Marian University (1-1) at the Concordia Dome at Sea Foam Stadium.
For the second straight game, the Golden Bears reached the 40-shot plateau and racked up a solid shot margin, outshooting the Knights 40-16. Freshman
Alina Boyce dropped in her second hat trick in as many games to start her career, also adding an assist and five ground balls.
Just inside of 10 minutes to play in the game, sophomore
Sheala Osborne scored the game winner to break an 8-8 tie on a feed from freshman
Maddie Hentges. It was Osborne's second goal of the year and Hentges' second assist. Hentges had a three-point day, also adding a pair of goals to go with five ground balls.
Despite playing 22 hours earlier and entering play with a short bench, Marian came out as the aggressors in the early minutes of the contest. The Knights successfully tilted the field to their attack side in the first five plus minutes, but the Concordia defense was excellent at not allowing clear looks to the cage as MU fired off just two shots despite possessing the ball for much of the early going.
Meanwhile, Concordia's first shot attempt didn't come until four minutes into the game which was a reversal from Friday night when CSP had already scored four goals by that same point in the contest.
As a result of the strong early defense and play in the net by freshman
Katie Lottsfeldt, Concordia was able to take the first lead when Boyce scooped up a ground ball off a saved shot and scored on the second effort.
Marian goalie Casey Monahan was kept busy from that point on by the Golden Bear attack as Concordia started opening up on the offensive end. Monahan registered 24 saves on the day, 12 in each half in a strong performance under fire. In CSP's net, Lottsfeldt recorded the first save in program history early in the game and finished the day making seven stops including five in the first half. Lottsfeldt also led the team with eight ground balls, while her counterpart Monahan had a game-high 11.
Boyce added her second goal of the game under two minutes later with just over 22 minutes to play in the half and Hentges scored CSP's third goal in under three minutes of play to give the Golden Bears a 3-0 lead in the ninth minute.
After a Marian goal just under 10 minutes into play, Concordia scored two more to open a 5-1 lead and would hold a pair of four goal advantages in the first half, 5-1 (15:58) and 6-2 (12:41) before heading into the break up three (6-3).
Marian started the second half strong in similar fashion to how it opened play in the contest and added results, scoring in the second and third minutes to cut the margin to a one goal game.
Boyce responded with her third goal of the game (sixth of the year) in the seventh minute and
Riley Burns netted her third goal of the season to push the lead back to three, 8-5 with 17:21 left in the game.
In the final 15 minutes the Golden Bears would be flagged for three yellow cards, with the Knights capitalizing on the first power play to bring it back to a one goal game with 14:41 to go, and tied the score at eight with just over 11 minutes remaining.
Just over a minute later, Osborne put CSP back in front on the Hentges pass and Hentges would add an insurance goal for a 10-8 lead with just under seven minutes to go.
In the closing minutes, Concordia was struck with its second and third yellow cards within 48 seconds of each other to provide Marian with a two-player advantage for over a minute of game time. But Concordia successfully killed the power play opportunities and held onto its two goal lead the rest of the way.
Aside from the strong shot differential, Concordia also held advantages in ground balls (41-29), draw controls (13-7) and were more efficient in clears (16-for-18) while limiting Marian (16-for-25).
Concordia's defense was led by freshman
Brooke Genzler with five draw controls and four ground balls along with two caused turnovers. Hentges and
Cassidy Leininger each added five ground balls, as well with Leininger producing a team-high three caused turnovers along with junior
Kallie LaValle who had a well-rounded game with a goal, two ground balls and three draw controls.
Marian was led by Breanna Dejong's hat trick and three ground balls although CSP forced her into seven turnovers. Rachel Moning had two goals and an assist and Kori Garland had two goals, six ground ball and three caused turnovers. Julia Robson pitched in a pair of assists and led the Knights with four caused turnovers, adding five ground balls.
Concordia remains at home to start the year on a four game homestand, hosting Westminster on Friday, February 24 at 7 p.m. and Findlay on Sunday, February 26 at 11 a.m. as part of the Sea Foam Festival which will include a busy day of college lacrosse on Concordia's non-gameday on Saturday, February 25. Details about the event will be posted during the week leading up to the games.
