Jones surpasses 1,000 career points but CSP falls to Winona State

CSP's 10 game winning streak came to an end at WSU

WINONA, Minn. – The Concordia Golden Bears women's basketball team (17-8, 13-6 NSIC) saw their 10 game winning streak end on Friday night as they fell to 59-69 on the road to #23 Winona State (20-5, 15-4 NSIC).

Despite the loss, Mishayla Jones became the 27th player in program history to surpass 1,000 career-points with her 16 point performance against the Warriors. Jones added six rebounds and five assists for Concordia.

Anna Schmitt also finished with 16 points to lead CSP while adding three rebounds and three assists. Kayla Miller finished with nine points on 3-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Caitlyn Russell also added nine points and six rebounds. Kyrah Fredenburg returned from injury and led the team with eight rebounds.

Winona State saw four players reach double figures in the win. Jenny Tuttle led the way with 16 points and six assists, Kayla Timmerman added 15 points, six rebounds and three assists. Tara Roelofs finished with 12 points and four assists and Hannah McGlone rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Warriors finished the game shooting 52.0% (26-50) from the floor and 44.4% (4-9) from distance. Concordia had a rough shooting night as they finished 34.4% (21-61) from the floor and 28.9% (11-38) from beyond the arc.

WSU held a 17-8 free throws attempted advantage and a 28-14 points in the paint advantage as well.

Right from the start, Winona State jumped out to an early 10-2 lead just over four minutes into the game and never looked back. Concordia would get as close as four with 1:32 left in the quarter but WSU responded with four free throws to take an eight point lead into the second quarter. The two teams combined for 42 first quarter points.

In the second quarter, the Golden Bears scored just 39 seconds into the quarter, but for the next three minutes neither team could find the basket. The scoreless drought would be ended with a 3-pointer by Kyrah Fredenburg and pulled CSP within just three points.

Over the next three minutes, WSU would outscore Concordia 9-3 and hold a 34-25 advantage with 2:18 left in the half. Haydn Becker would drain a triple with just over a minute left in the quarter but a pair of free throws late in the quarter gave the Warriors a 36-28 halftime lead.

Coming out of the locker room, CSP would continue to fight back and would get as close as five after a 3-pointer by Mishayla Jones. However, the Warriors would respond with an 11-6 run to close out the quarter and take a 53-43 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, after a lay-up by Anna Schmitt, Jones would drain her second three pointer of the game to not only pull CSP within five, but gave her over 1,000 points for her career. Following the 3-pointer by Jones, Schmitt would answer with a three of her own to pull the Golden Bears within two with 7:33 left in the game.

However, just like every instance earlier in the game when Concordia got close, WSU would build their lead back up and that is exactly what they did. Winona State would go on to outscore CSP 16-8 the remainder of the game and come away with the 69-59 win.

With the loss CSP moves into a tie with Wayne State for four place in the South Division standings and with the win and Sioux Falls loss, Winona State moves into sole possession of first place in the South Division standings.

Concordia is now 29-17 all-time against Winona State.

The Golden Bears are in action again tomorrow as they wrap up their road trip against Upper Iowa at 4 pm.
