Cold shooting to blame in CSP loss at Winona

The Bears were held to their lowest shooting percentages of the season against the Warriors

WINONA, Minn. - The Golden Bear women's basketball team (3-6, 1-3 NSIC) fell to the Winona State Warriors (8-1, 4-1 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon to go 1-1 on their first conference road trip of the 2017-18 season.

Last season, the Bears went 1-1 against the Warriors, winning in their first meeting 66-59 on their home court. During their second matchup, CSP was on the losing end of a 69-59 decision, as Concordia was outscored 25-17 in the first quarter, which ended up being the difference in the game as the Bears were only outscored by two in the next three quarters. This year, the Warriors grabbed the lead late in the first quarter and did not look back, leading for the rest of the game, going on to win 62-43.

Offensively the Bears were led by junior center Lindsay Dorr, who was the only CSP player to reach double figures, with ten. Freshman Ayla Lemke led the rebounding efforts, finishing with a season-high eight, while also collecting two blocks. Ten different Golden Bears scored in Saturday's game which is the most players the Bears have had score in one game this season.

It was a rough shooting outing for the Bears, as they shot 28.1% from the floor and 12.9% from behind the arc, which are the lowest percentages posted by Concordia so far this season. The Warriors fared better, shooting 45.8% from the floor and 23.1% from three.

The first quarter was a close one, with leads going back and forth. The Bears took the lead 12-10 with two minutes left in the first ten quarter, but the Warriors closed out the first ten minutes with four straight points to capture the lead 14-12 heading into the first break.

The Warriors came out strong to start the second quarter, scoring the first six points to lead by eight points six minutes into the quarter. The second quarter was a tough one for the Bears as they were held to only six points throughout the quarter, as they shot 16.7% from the field and were unable to connect on any of their eight three-point attempts.

The second half belonged Winona State, as they led by double digits for the entire twenty minutes. In the fourth quarter a three-pointer from Lemke got the game within twelve with seven minutes left in the game, but CSP was not able to get it any closer and the Warriors closed out the game up by 19, winning 62-43.

Winona State was led by their only senior, Hannah McGlone, who finished the game with a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Kayla Schaefer also ended in double figures for the Warriors, with 13 points.

The Bears will continue conference play next Friday when they take on Minnesota State in Mankato with the tip-off set for 6 p.m. After this matchup, CSP will play their last non-conference game of the season when they take on Palm Beach Atlantic at home on December 18th at 4 p.m. Follow along with all the Golden Bear women's basketball action at cspbears.com/watch.
