ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia Golden Bears men's basketball team (1-3) closes out non-conference play this week with Presentation (3-3) coming to town on Tuesday night before a trip to Michigan Tech (2-2) on Saturday. Tuesday night's game is scheduled for 7 p.m. while Saturday's contest will tip off at 3 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Last week, CSP rolled to an 85-51 win over North Central before going 1-2 in the Black & Gold Shootout at the University of Milwaukee.
The Golden Bears opened the tournament up a shock 69-55 exhibition win over Milwaukee on their home court on Friday night. Their win over Milwaukee was their first win over a Division I opponent in the DII era. CSP followed with an 84-62 loss to Elon in exhibition play and a 77-67 loss to FIU in regular season play.
Bryndan Matthews continued his hot start to the season by averaging 17.0 points per game on an efficient 60.9% (14-23) from the floor to go along with 5.5 rebounds per game in the two regular season contests this week.
Avan Ward added 14.0 points and 8.0 boards in the two regular season games, capped off by his first career double-double against FIU on Sunday. In addition,
Ted Brown knocked down a solid 62.5% (10-16) of his shots while averaging 11.5 points and 4.0 rebounds.
PRESENTATION SERIES HISTORY
The Golden Bears and the Saints have met just one time prior to Tuesday night's matchup. That lone meeting came all the way back on Feb. 24, 1998 as Concordia knocked off Presentation by a score of 71-59 in the opening round of the NAIA Playoffs.
MICHIGAN TECH SERIES HISTORY
Concordia has also met Michigan Tech once heading into this weekend with that meeting coming just last season. The Golden Bears played host to the Huskies in their final non-conference meeting back on Nov. 28, 2016 as they stormed back in the second half for an 85-80 victory.
In that win, the Golden Bears won the battle in the low block as they outscored MTU in the paint by a margin of 46-26. CSP also took advantage of their depth with the freshman pair of
Max Keefe and
Sam Siganos both scoring in double figures to give the Golden Bears a 25-8 edge in bench points. Four of the five starters joined the two off the bench in double figures as
Bryndan Matthews led the way with 17 points and nine rebounds while three other starters registered in with at least 11 points.
NSIC LEADERS
Early in the season, the Golden Bears have several players that rank near the top of the league in different statistical categories.
Leading the way is junior guard
Bryndan Matthews, who ranks sixth in rebounds per game (7.8), eighth in defensive rebounds per game (5.8), 10
th in points per game (18.0), 12
th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5) and 13
th in offensive rebounds (2.0).
Sophomore guard
Avan Ward ranks near the top in nearly as many categories as his 2.3 threes per game rank 11
th, his 5.5 defensive rebounds per game rank 11
th, his 6.5 overall rebounds per game rank 13
th, and his 14.8 points per game rank 21
st in the league.
Sophomore center
Ted Brown has been extremely efficient from the floor so far this season as his 73.1% (19-26) from the floor ranks just 0.6% behind the conference leader in that category as he ranks second. In addition, Brown sits in ninth in the NSIC with 2.5 offensive rebounds per game.
