Last minute goal lifts CSP over MSUM

Cayla Renwick scored in the 110th minute of play to lead Bears to victory

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul soccer team moves to 8-4-1 (6-3-1 NSIC) on the season with a double overtime victory over the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons (1-8-3, 1-7-2 NSIC) on a rainy Saturday afternoon. This is the second overtime victory in a row for the Golden Bears, after a 2-1 overtime victory against Wayne State last Sunday.

Head coach Steve Bellis reflected on the match saying, "Our team yet again showed tremendous character, playing to the final seconds to get a fantastic result. Credits should also go to Moorhead for being great competitors. They are well-coached and organized and we had to be patient in breaking them down."

With the win, the Bears and Winona State (who also won today) move into a tie for fifth place in the NSIC. This was the third time in series history against MSU Moorhead that they have needed overtime and this was the ninth consecutive win over the Dragons. This is the fifth time in Division II history that the Bears have had six or more conference wins and there are still five conference games left this season.

The first half opened with lots of play within the Dragon side of the field, with the Bears taking three shots within the first five minutes of play. The Dragons did not take a shot until the 22nd minute and only had two shots in the half. Despite some early chances in the box and some corner kick opportunities, the Dragons and Bears would enter halftime tied 0-0.

In the second half, CSP picked up right where they left off in the first half by putting a lot of pressure on the Moorhead defense, taking eight shots in the half. The Bears were unable to capitalize on any of those chances, and regulation time expired without a goal being scored. The Golden Bear defense did not allow a single shot in the second half which helped CSP to a 19-2 shot advantage in regulation play.

The first overtime started with some excitement as Jordan Rowan-Stafford took a pass from Cayla Renwick and put up a shot that ended up hitting the crossbar and going out of bounds. Rowan-Stafford lead the offense on the day with seven shots including three in the first overtime period. The first overtime ended with no goals being scored but the Bears held the shot advantage 4-2.

In the second overtime, the Bears and Dragons traded shots back and forth for most of the period. As the time dwindled it looked like the game was going to end in a tie. But, with under a minute left the Bears attacked down field, ending in a goal by freshman Cayla Renwick with 47 seconds left in the game. This was Renwick's third goal of the season and second game-winner.

Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Nelson picked up her fifth win of the season and her third shutout of the year.
