Offensive surge drives CSP past Crookston

The Golden Bears are tied for 4th in the NSIC after 3-0 win

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia Golden Bears (6-3-1, 4-2-1 NSIC) defeated the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles (0-9, 0-7 NSIC) 3-0 on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Sea Foam Stadium. With this victory, the Golden Bears are tied with Winona State and Minnesota Duluth for fourth in the NSIC standings.

The Bears now have an all-time 12-6-2 record against Crookston, although this was the team's first win against them since the 2013 season. The contests in both 2016 and 2014 ended in 0-0 ties, whereas the 2015 matchup ended with CSP being defeated 2-0.

In this year's matchup, the Concordia offense was too much for the Golden Eagles, as the Bears scored three goals in the first half. The defense held solid in the second half, not letting Crookston take a shot to secure the victory.

The scoring opened with freshman Cayla Renwick finishing a pass from teammate Shannon Wynne in the 9th minute of play. This was Renwick's first collegiate goal and Wynne's first points this season. Renwick did not wait long before scoring her second goal as a Golden Bear as she scored again under three minutes later. This time, midfielder Jade Weller fired a shot from about thirty yards out and Renwick was there for the rebound. Renwick took a shot of her own that was saved but got that rebound as well and this time put it away to make it 2-0 Golden Bears.

Capping off the scoring in the first half, was sophomore defender Hannah Pavek when she found the bottom left corner of the net from 20 yards out in the 21st minute. This was Pavek's second goal of the year. Junior Jordan Rowan-Stafford picked up the assist on the play for her eighth point so far this season. The rest of the half passed without another goal, but the Bears outshot the Eagles 15-4 and kept much of the play on the Eagle end of the field.

The second half also featured most of the play being on the Crookston half, as CSP created even more scoring opportunities, including three corner kicks in the span of one minute that resulted in three shots. Eleven different CSP players had shots in the game, with Weller leading the way with six shots, followed by Renwick with four.

The defense also had a strong second half, not allowing a single shot and only allowing one shot on goal the entire game. The shot advantage ended in favor of the Golden Bears 25-4. Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Nelson picked up her second shutout of the year and her 3rd win this season and is now 3-2.

The Bears hit the road Friday, October 6th to take on Augustana before returning home for their next three games. Game time on the 6th is set for 4 p.m. in Sioux Falls. Follow along at cspbears.com/watch.
