BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Concordia Golden Bears women's basketball team (14-7, 10-5 NSIC) kicked off the weekend road trip with a 68-60 win over Bemidji State (6-13, 3-12 NSIC) on Friday night, inside the BSU Gymnasium extending their winning streak to seven games.
The 16-2 run by the Golden Bears following the second quarter media timeout proved to be the difference maker in the game as CSP would take a 16 point lead heading into the locker room. Concordia never trailed at any point of the game.
CSP finished the game shooting 43.9% (25-57) from the floor and also held a 43-34 rebounding advantage. Bemidji State finished the game 35.6% (21-59) shooting from the floor and 36.4% (8-22) from beyond the arc.
Mishayla Jones played outstanding for the Golden Bears as she finished with a career-high 31 points, while adding six rebounds and four assists. She is the first player to finish with 30+ points since
Lauren Shifflett scored 34 points last season against the University of Jamestown.
Caitlyn Russell recorded her second straight double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. She also added three blocks in the win.
Anna Schmitt rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
Kayla Miller finished with eight rebounds which ties her career-high.
Bemidji State was led by Aimee Pelzer who scored a team-high 25 points. She also added three rebounds and three assists. Sierra Senske added 10 points for the Beavers and pulled in a team-high seven rebounds.
It was a quick start Concordia as they built an early 8-2 lead just three minutes into the game. The Golden Bears would continue to build upon their lead by as much as nine in the first quarter.
Mishayla Jones would score 10 points in the first period helping CSP take a 14-8 advantage heading into the second quarter of play.
The momentum would continue to favor Concordia at the start of the second quarter as they built their lead to 10. However, the momentum would shift as Bemidji State would put together a 9-1 run over a four minute span to pull within four heading into the media timeout.
Coming out of the media timeout, BSU would get another basket to pull within two but the Golden Bears would respond with a 16-2 run to close out the half and take a 35-19 lead heading into halftime.
Only three players scored in the first half for CSP and leading the way was
Mishayla Jones with 20 first half points on 8-11 shooting.
Caitlyn Russell added 11 first half points and
Anna Schmitt had four points in the half. The Beavers were led by Aimee Pelzer who scored six first half points.
Coming out of the intermission, both teams' offenses were clicking as the two teams combined for 34 points in the third quarter. The Golden Bears would continue to hold the advantage as they would lead by as much as 18 on two occasions, giving them a 53-35 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
Russell notched eight points in the third quarter for CSP and Pelzer scored seven points in the quarter for the Beavers.
In the final quarter of play BSU tried to fight back and pull within striking distance, but the big second quarter run by Concordia was too much to overcome. The Beavers did outscore CSP 25-15 in the quarter and a pair of three pointers in the final minute pulled them within single digits for the first time since the second quarter.
Concordia now holds a 29-11 series record against Bemidji State and have now won 14 of the last 15 matchups against the Beavers.
The Golden Bears conclude their four game road trip tomorrow as they travel to Minnesota Crookston to take on the Golden Eagles at 4 pm.
