ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia Golden Bears women's basketball team (10-7, 6-5 NSIC) used some hot free-throw shooting to get past U-Mary (9-10, 4-7 NSIC) on Friday night inside the Gangelhoff Center.
Concordia went 31-34 (91.2%) from the free-throw line for the game, including 20-22 in the fourth quarter alone. The 31 made free-throws ranks second in program history for a single game.
Mishayla Jones and
Anna Schmitt each went 13-14 from the charity stripe. The 13 made free-throws is career-highs for both players.
Jones led the way for CSP as she scored a game-high 19 points. She also added three assists and two steals. Schmitt added 17 points and five rebounds and
Kyrah Fredenburg rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Marauders were led by Gabbie Bohl who scored a team-high 16 points and pulled in 11 rebounds. Lauren Rotunda added 14 points while Hannah Larson and Cassie Askvig each finished with 11 points. Larson added nine rebounds and four blocks for U-Mary.
It took both teams almost two minutes into the quarter to get the first basket of the game. At the 8:20 mark U-Mary would get the first two points of the game and later make a free-throw to give them a 3-0 lead. CSP would respond though with a 9-0 run over a two and a half minute span.
The Marauders would counter with a 12-4 run to close the quarter to take a 15-13 lead. U-Mary would score 12 of their 15 first quarter points in the paint.
Coming out of the quarter U-Mary would continue with the momentum, opening up the quarter with a 10-0 run giving them a 25-13 lead with 6:33 left in the half.
The Golden Bears would fall behind by as much as 14, but with 2:50 remaining the quarter CSP would go on a 15-0 run to close out the half and go into the locker room trailing 31-32.
Kyrah Fredenburg played a big part in the run as she hit a big 3-pointer to pull Concordia within single digits. The following possession Fredenburg would drive the lane, make the layup and get fouled in the process. She would make the loan free-throw to complete the three-point-play and pull CSP within four.
Kayla Miller would complete the run with a 3-pointer with only five seconds remaining.
Following the intermission, the entire third quarter was back and forth and very evenly played. The lead changed hands multiple times and neither team led by more than five. U-Mary would hold a 48-45 advantage heading into the final quarter of play.
The fourth quarter was all about free-throws for the Golden Bears as they went an outstanding 20-22 from the charity stripe to help seal the 78-68 victory over the Marauders.
Mishayla Jones went 11-12 from the free-throw line in the final quarter after only attempting two free-throws in the first three quarters.
CSP outscored U-Mary 33-20 in the final quarter of play.
Concordia now holds a 12-5 series record against U-Mary.
Concordia is back in action again tomorrow as they host Minot State at 4 pm.
