ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (10-20, 4-6 NSIC) scored 22 runs in 10 innings to claim a pair of 11-3 wins in five innings to complete the sweep of Minnesota Crookston (7-21, 1-7 NSIC) on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Bears made it three wins in a row as they picked up their first doubleheader sweep of the season.
Concordia-St. Paul 11, Minnesota Crookston 3 (5 inn.)The Golden Bears jumped on the Golden Eagles early in game one as they put two on the board in the first, six in the second and three in the third en route to a five-inning victory.
The
Justine Schattner and
Haley Schanks combination drove in seven of CSP's 11 runs as Schattner stayed red hot going 2-2 with her fourth homer of the year while collecting four RBI and Schanks went 3-4 with three driven in.
Carlie Hart also drove in a pair as she went 2-4 while
Nicole Thompson collected two hits and drove in one.
In the circle,
Linzy Heim (7-10) picked up her seventh win of the season as she gave up three runs on five hits in the five-inning complete game effort.
Bailey Braatz (2-11) took the loos for UMC as she worked the first 2.2 innings, allowing 11 earned runs.
Schattner opened the scoring in the top of the first as she went deep to left center to drive in Jamie Fleischacker, who was hit by a pitch, to make it 2-0 just three batters into the game.
UMC answered right back in the bottom of the inning as they used three singles, a pair of walks and an RBI groundout to take a 3-2 lead. Allison Foley and Alexis Khoshaba each drove in runs with singles before Sammy Kuhlow gave them the lead with a run-scoring grounder to third.
The Golden Bears quickly regained the lead in the second as
Carlie Hart singled,
Elena Koncar walked and
Sarah Kivisto singled to load the bases before the next two hitters were retired. Thompson extended the inning with a run-scoring single before Schattner added two more RBI with an opposite field hit. That wouldn't be all in the inning as Jarosz walked before Schanks drove in one and Hart brought home two more with singles. CSP totaled six runs in the inning to build an 8-3 lead through an inning and a half.
After the Golden Eagles were retired in order, Concordia stepped back in and added to their lead with another crooked number. With runners on first and second with one down, Thompson drove another single to left which allowed
Kelly McKenzie to score before Schanks delivered another two-run single to give CSP an 11-3 advantage heading to bottom half of the third.
That would be all offensively for either team as Heim and UMC reliever Heather Cunningham matched zeros the rest of the way to bring it to an 11-3 final.
Concordia-St. Paul 11, Minnesota Crookston 3 (5 inn.)Concordia scored a pair of runs in each of the first three innings before tacking on five in the fifth to win the second game by the same margin as game one.
Nicole Thompson completed a nearly perfect day as she picked up three more hits, scored twice and drove in two more to put her at 5-6 with four runs scored and three RBI in the doubleheader. The impressive day improved her average from .425 all the way to .452.
Justin Schattner had just one hit in the second game, but it was a big one as she double home three more runs to continue her dominant freshman campaign.
Liz Jarosz went 2-4 with a walk and a double with two drive in while
Jamie Fleischhacker and
Kelly McKenzie each added two hits as well.
Haley Schanks (3-10) got back in the win column as she limited UMC to three runs on six hits while striking out four in the complete game.
Mikayla Jones (2-4) took the loss as she allowed all 11 runs (eight earned) in 4.2 innings.
Concordia got off to another fast start in the first as
Jamie Fleischhacker and
Nicole Thompson singled before
Justine Schattner moved them up a base and
Liz Jarosz drove them both in with a single up the middle.
The Golden Bears were right back at it in the second as they benefitted from a Minnesota Crookston error with two outs that allowed
Elena Koncar to score before Thompson singled home
Sarah Kivisto to bring it to 4-0.
The bottom of the UMC order manufactured a run in their half of the second as Lexie Santoyo single in a run, but Concordia responded right back with their third straight inning with two runs. Jarosz and Schanks doubled back-to-back to start the inning before Jarosz came around to score on an error to make it 6-1.
Minnesota Crookston worked their way back in the game in the bottom of the inning as a double off the bat of Allison Foley and RBI singles from Gabriel Antolak and Alexis Khoshaba cut the deficit to three at 6-3.
That would be as close as they would get as Schanks settled in from there and shut the door the rest of the way.
Concordia put the game away in the fifth as they scored five runs in the inning to enact the run rule for the second straight game. The offense came in the form of seven straight hitters reaching base with two outs. Koncar and Kivisto got the rally going with singles before
Kelly McKenzie brought the first run of the inning in with a single of her own. After a Fleischhacker walk, Thompson hit an infield single for her third hit and second RBI of the game.
Justine Schattner put the finishing touches on with a double down the line in right to clear the cases and add three more runs batted in to her team-leading total of 34 on the year.
