Wildcats swing past Golden Bears in regular season finale

WAYNE, Neb. – The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (12-36, 6-22 NSIC) closed out the regular season with a pair of losses at Wayne State (27-24, 21-9 NSIC) on Sunday afternoon.

Wayne State 8, Concordia-St. Paul 0 (5 inn.)
The Wildcats jumped on the Golden Bears early with four in the first, three in the second and another in the third to cruise to the five-inning victory in game one.

Cassy Miller (20-15) nearly no-hit the Golden Bears as the lone CSP hit came in the form of a Jamie Fleischhacker infield single in the fourth. She walked two and struck out seven in the win.

In addition to Fleischhacker's single, Liz Jarosz and Elena Koncar each drew a walk for CSP.

Linzy Heim (8-19) took the loss as she worked the first two innings before Makenna Giese came in to work the final two innings.

Wayne State took advantage of a Golden Bear throwing error to push the first run across before Melanie Alyea singled in another run. Sam O'Brien added two more with a homer to left later in the inning to extend it to 4-0 after one.

The Wildcats were right back at it in the second as Emily Chandler picked up an RBI single before Abbie Hix drove in two with a single of her own.

Katelyn Wobken drove in the final run for the Wildcats with another run-scoring single in the third to push the gap to the final mark of 8-0.

Wayne State 14, Concordia-St. Paul 2 (5 inn.)
The Wildcats once again came out swinging in the first as they hung 11 on the board in the opening frame to set up the sweep.

Wayne State hammered out 13 hits in 24 at-bats as the top eight hitters all collected at least a hit.

Justine Schattner was the only CSP player to put up a multi-hit game as she singled twice, drove in a run and scored another. Nicole Thompson, Carlie Hart, Elena Koncar and Kelly McKenzie all added singles as well.

Cassy Miller (21-15) picked up her second win of the day as she worked the first three innings, allowing an earned run, before giving way to Shelby Wobken and Sarah Macias.

Haley Schanks (4-17) worked 3.2 of the 4.0 innings for Concordia while Makenna Giese also recorded an out.

The Golden Bears jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Schattner scored on an error off the bat of Liz Jarosz in the first, but the Wildcats quickly took control with 11 in the bottom of the inning.

Five different players drove in runs in the inning for WSC, including an RBI single and two-run homer from Emily Chandler, as the Wildcats batted around twice in the inning.

Schattner got one back with an RBI single down the line in the second before Wayne State answered right back with three in their half of the second on a Katelyn Wobken three-run homer to bring it to the final margin.
