CSP scored 36 runs on 36 hits in 11 trips to the plate on Sunday

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (6-8) bounced back on Sunday with a sweep as they picked up an 11-8 win over Bemidji State and a 25-8 win in five innings over Minnesota Crookston at the Husky Dome.

The offense came to play on Sunday as the Golden Bears had a combined 36 runs on 36 hits in 11 trips to the plate in the two games. In addition, Concordia's 25 runs in the win against UMC set the single-game D-II era record on a hit-filled morning.

Concordia-St. Paul 11, Bemidji State 8
After seeing an early five-run lead disappear, the Golden Bears rebounded and put a five-spot on the board in the seventh to pull away from the Beavers in the early game.

The CSP bats came alive in the early morning matchup as they hammered out 11 runs on 15 hits in an offensive slugfest. Eight of Concordia's nine starters reached base multiple times in the game as the entire lineup contributed to the scoring outburst.

Justine Schattner drove in five as she went 3-5 with a double while Jamie Fleischhacker went 2-4 with a homer and three RBI. Nicole Thompson also picked up three hits while Carlie Hart, Haley Schanks and Elena Koncar added two apiece.

Carlie Hart and Nicole Thompson got the game started with a pair of bunt singles before Liz Jarosz drew a walk to load the bases. With two down, Haley Schanks put the Golden Bears on the board with another infield single as CSP went up 1-0.

Lyndsay Peterson tied it up with a solo homer to center in the bottom of the inning, but the Golden Bears jumped right back out front in the second. Justine Schattner delivered a big two-out hit to center field to drive in Kelly McKenzie and Hart as the Golden Bear lead hit 3-1.

After a few scoreless innings, Concordia added three more to their lead to push it to 6-1 in the fifth as Jamie Fleischhacker launched a three-run home run to left to drive in Schattner and Jarosz.

That lead did not last much longer as Bemidji State answered back with five runs in their half of the inning to even the score at 6-6. Makayla Pagel hit a two-run homer and Jessica Yost followed later in the inning with a three-run homer to tie it up.

The score remained tied 6-6 into the seventh when the Golden Bear lineup exploded for six hits and five runs to break it open. After a Fleischhacker single and a Schanks double, Elena Koncar brought the go-ahead run home with a single of her own. Kelly McKenzie followed with another RBI single before Schattner drove in three as she got thrown out trying to stretch a single to a double.

Things got interesting in the bottom of the inning as two runs crossed the plate on bases-loaded walks and the winning run reached the plate, but Linzy Heim worked out of the jam to preserve the win.

Heim (4-2) picked up a complete game with as she struck out six and gave up five earned runs in the victory.

Jenna Massingill (1-1) took the loss for the Beavers as she allowed five runs in three innings of relief.

Concordia-St. Paul 25, Minnesota Crookston 8 (5 inn.)
The Golden Bears carried that momentum into the second game of the day as they put up an incredible eight runs in the first and 15 runs in the fourth en route to picking up a 25-8 win in five innings.

After slugging their way to 15 hits in the first game, CSP doubled down with 21 hits in just four trips to the plate in the finale. All 15 players that played reached base at least once and 13 of the 15 players collected hits as the whole squad joined in the act.

The 25 runs set a new Division-II era record for the Golden Bears for runs scored in game, surpassing the previous mark of 22. The 21 hits also fell one hit short of tying the program record set back in 2014 against Minnesota Crookston.

Nicole Thompson paced the team with four hits while Justine Schattner and Liz Jarosz added three while Elena Koncar chipped in two more.

Concordia smashed eight extra-base hits, including a grand slam off the bat of Kelly McKenzie and three-run shots from Frankie Munkwitz and Jarosz.

After a quick top of the first, the Golden Bears got things rolling offensively in the bottom of the inning as they strung together eight hits, a walk, and a pair of hit by pitches to hang an eight on the board. Fleischhacker opened the scoring with a bases loaded walk before Schanks chipped in an RBI single and Lizzy Swenson drove in two more with a double. After a Koncar bunt single loaded the bases, Kelly McKenzie promptly unloaded them with a grand slam to center field for her first career home run.

The Golden Eagles cut the CSP lead in half in the top of the second as Maggie Morales brought home a run with a run-scoring double and Brooke Timmins sent a three-run home run out to left center.

Concordia got two back in the third as Schattner scored on a wild pitch and Fleischhacker drove in Jarosz with a double to make it 10-4.

Minnesota Crookston once again closed the gap with three runs in their half of the fourth with the aid of a pair of CSP errors, but the Golden Bears exploded to close out any chance of a comeback with 15 runs in the bottom of the inning. Concordia batted around twice as they sent 18 hitters to the plate in the fourth, with the first 15 reaching base safely.

Koncar scored on a wild pitch to kick off the scoring in the inning before Thompson brought home two with a single and later scored on an error. Later in the inning, Frankie Munkwitz stepped up to the plate as a pinch hitter and took a 1-0 pitch and deposited an opposite field home run over the wall in right center to bring in three more. Nicolle Sparks added a pinch-hit RBI single and Lauren Bartel drove in two with a single of her own before Thompson made it three RBI in the inning with a run-scoring double. It didn't end there as Schattner drove in another with a single and Jarosz wrapped up the scoring with a three-run blast down the line in left. The next three hitters were retired in order to bring the huge inning to a close.

UMC got one back in the top of the fifth on a pinch-hit homer from Morgan Duda before Schanks closed out the inning and the game.

Schanks (2-6) picked up win as she grabbed a pair of strikeouts in five innings of work while Heather Cunningham (0-3) took the loss for Minnesota Crookston.

Concordia now has the next two weekends off before closing out the non-conference slate in Missouri at the Apple Market Regional Crossover.
