FAYETTE, Iowa - Concordia-St. Paul (12-13, 8-11 NSIC) cruised to a 71-55 road win at Upper Iowa (5-20, 4-15 NSIC) on Friday night at Dorman Gymansium. The Golden Bears have now won seven of their last 10 overall and three of four on the road. The Golden Bears will play at McCown Gym tomorrow afternoon against South Division leader #9 Winona State (24-2, 17-2 NSIC)
Tonight, Concordia's speed was too much for Upper Iowa as the Golden Bears turned 19 UIU turnovers into scoring margins of 21-4 off turnovers and 19-2 in fastbreak situations.
The Golden Bears were able to pull away in the second quarter, outscoring Upper Iowa 20-11 after a first quarter that featured three ties and a lead change in a tight opening period.
Concordia went into the break leading 32-22, owning a pair of 10-point leads late in the half after a 9-2 burst sparked by a pair of buckets by
Mishayla Jones.
Jones would also get fouled late in the half and although she missed the free throws, she was able to knock down an elbow jumper with three seconds left as
Lauren Shifflett collected the offensive rebound and kicked it out.
Jones finished the night with 10 points and added three assists and the Golden Bear lead stayed at least six points the rest of the way.
In the third quarter, the ball pressure provided by
Anna Schmitt led to multiple steals and fastbreak layups to push the lead to 15, 50-35 to cap a 12-3 run.
Schmitt finished with 15 points, four assists and three steals and was 7-14 from the field.
In the fourth quarter, Concordia was dangerous from the arc as
Lauren Shifflett hit a pair of three-pointers to push the lead from 12 (56-44) to 16 (62-46) between the six and a half and five minute marks.
Concordia led by as many as 20 points late, 69-49 in the final two minutes of the game and the closest UIU had the game in the second half was six points (38-32) midway through the third quarter.
Shifflett led the team in scoring for the third straight game with a 22-point performance. She made 3-8 from the arc and 7-14 from the floor, also getting to the foul line six times as she converted five.
While Shifflett, Schmitt and Jones were busy scoring, sophomore
Kyrah Fredenburg was doing damage in the paint with 13 rebounds, a pair of blocks and a steal while adding seven points.
The four players combined to sit out a combined 23 minutes as each played at least 32 minutes in the game.
The Peacocks were led by Whitney Keiffer's 20 points while Carly Pagel added 12.
