Golden Bears fall in exhibition matchup at South Dakota

CSP drops tough matchup at USD

VERMILLION, S.D. – The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball fell in an exhibition matchup with the University of South Dakota (6-1) by a score of 83-65 on Wednesday night on the road.

Eleven players saw action for the Golden Bears on Wednesday night and nine of them would make it into the scoring column. Leading the way for CSP was Lauren Shifflett with 10 points, Anna Rollag finished with nine points, while Anna Schmitt and Haydn Becker each tallied eight points. Kyrah Fredenburg led the team with seven rebounds on the night.

South Dakota scored first to start the game and CSP would tie the game two possessions later off a basket by Lindsay Dorr, but USD would then put together an 11-0 run to take 13-2 lead just four minutes into the game. The early run by the Coyotes would be too much for Concordia to overcome as they would not get closer than four points for the remainder of the quarter.

After trailing by nine at the end of the first quarter, the Golden Bears would start to find a rhythm as they outscored USD 24-20 in the second quarter. CSP drained four 3-pointers in the second quarter including a buzzer beating 3-pointer by Haydn Becker as the second quarter expired to cut the Coyotes lead to five heading into the locker room.

In the third quarter, Concordia would keep the USD lead at single digits for the first four minutes of the period, but Coyotes would outscore the Golden Bears 14-3 the remainder of the quarter to take a 61-43 lead heading into the final quarter of play

In the fourth quarter, the hot shooting of USD continued as they built their lead up to 20 with 3:34 left and from there they would score 13 points in the time remaining to come away with 83-58 win. South Dakota was led by Allison Arens who scored a game-high 23 points, while Ciara Duffy added 21 points and eight rebounds for USD. Madison McKeever added 12 points off the bench for the Coyotes.

Concordia returns to action this weekend as they open up NSIC play with a pair of road games at Augustana on Friday at 6 pm and at Wayne State on Saturday at 4 pm.
