WAYNE, Neb. - The Concordia University soccer team (2-5-4, 2-2-4 NSIC) played to a 0-0 draw at Wayne State (6-3-3, 3-3-3 NSIC) on Sunday afternoon.
"We competed hard and overall played a decent game. We dominated possession for long periods of the game and created multiple opportunities to go ahead. We leave frustrated with just a point." Head coach
Steve Bellis said following the game.
The Golden Bears put pressure on the Wildcats during the game but were unable to beat WSC keeper Kylie Comba who made eight saves while picking up her fourth shutout on the season. CSP out-shot WSC 21-11 overall and 8-4 on shots on goal and maintained ball control on their attacking end for much of the game.
Sophomore forward
Katri Gifford led the Golden Bears with four shots on the afternoon.
Erica Landry,
Chelsie Lindsay,
Jordan Rowan-Stafford,
Jade Weller all attempted three shots for the game. Two of Landry's and Rowan-Stafford's shots were on goal.
Mary Kaiser,
Carly Simonian,
Brooke Salo,
Madyson St. Germain, and
Hannah Pedersen each registered one shot in the game for CSP.
Valerie Hernandez led Wayne State with three shots (one on goal) on the afternoon, while multiple players each attempted a single shot.
Concordia keeper
Emily Nelson came away with her third shutout in the last four games. Nelson saved all four shots she faced.
The first half was pretty well balanced offensively as each team combined for 11 shots (7-CSP, 4-WSC) and favored the Golden Bears with shots on goal by 2-1. In the second half Concordia picked up the intensity as they out-shot WSC 12-6 in the final 45 minutes of regulation. CSP's pressure came early as they attempted three shots on goal in the first eight minutes into the second half of play.
The Golden Bears attempted six more shots in an eight minute span midway through the second half but could still not find the back of the net. Regulation would end and both teams tied at zero forcing overtime.
The first overtime session only had one shot attempt and that went to Gifford who had it blocked by a Wayne State defender. In the second overtime, Wayne State had a chance to end the game and come away three points as Valerie Hernandez would attempt a header off a corner kick but it was saved by Nelson. CSP would also have a chance to end the game with 20 seconds remaining, but their lone shot attempt in overtime by Lindsay was blocked by a defender.
The Golden Bears return home on Wednesday, October 12 when they play host to Minnesota State at 7 pm at Sea Foam Stadium.
