Golden Bears drop a very competitive match to #11 Minot State

CSP drops a tough game to MSU

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Golden Bear's soccer team (4-8-4, 4-5-4 NSIC) dropped a very competitive match by a score of 1-0 to #11 Minot State (12-1-1, 11-0-1 NSIC) Sunday afternoon at Sea Foam Stadium.

"I thought we created enough chances to win it. They attempted a few more shots from farther out but we took good shots up until the final seconds. We battled hard and showed good spirit and we need to carry that into our last weekend and come away with two wins next weekend." Head coach Steve Bellis said following the game.

Minot State proved why they are one of the best offensive teams in the NSIC as they jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just five and a half minutes into the game off a goal by Brianna Ramsey.

For the remainder of the first half CSP had multiple opportunities to tie the game but could not find that tying goal. At the 10:34 mark Chelsie Lindsay gained possession of the ball after a mad scramble following a corner kick but her shot attempt was saved by Erin Rafferty.

At the 23:23 mark of the first half, Jade Weller was awarded a free kick for CSP about 40 yards away from the goal and kicking into the wind, her attempted shot just sailed over the top right corner of the net.

With about 15 minutes remaining in the first half, Katri Gifford carried the ball down the left side of the field and sent a crossing pass to the far post where Colette Piche would get her foot on the ball but it would be deflected wide of the net.

The Golden Bear's last good chance of the first half they had to try and tie the game was at the 36 minute mark when Erica Landry carried the ball nearly 70 yards before she attempted a laser of a shot from about 20 yards out that just sailed over the cross bar.

The Beavers would go into the half with a 1-0 lead but CSP would end up outshooting MSU 8-6 in the first half.

Coming out in the second half both teams were playing with a lot of intensity, Concordia looking to the game and Minot State looking to build upon their lead. Just under two minutes into the second MSU had a chance to double their lead but the one touch shot by Ninfa Ramirez went just wide keeping the Beavers lead at only one.

MSU controlled the ball for most of the second half outshooting the Golden Bears 14-5 in the final 45 minutes of play and 20-13 for the game.

Jade Weller had two very close opportunities to the game as she nearly beat keeper Erin Rafferty in the 82nd minute but Rafferty made an incredible diving save to prevent the goal. About two minutes later, Weller had another opportunity to tie the game but her attempted header went right into Rafferty's hands.

CSP would not get another shot attempt in the remaining five minutes allowing the Beavers to escape with a 1-0 win on the road.

Concordia's defense held Ninfa Ramirez, the NSIC leading goal scorer, to her second scoreless game of the season and tied for her lowest shot attempts in a game with three. Chloe Melton led the way for the Beavers as she attempted a game-high four shots.

Weller led the way with four shots for CSP while Erica Landry, Chelsie Lindsay and Colette Piche each attempted two shots on the afternoon.

Jordyn Clark took the loss in net for the Golden Bears but she did come away with four saves and some key deflections that prevented Minot State from building upon their lead.

The Golden Bears return to action next week as they travel to Upper Iowa on Friday, October 28th for a 3 pm start before returning home on Sunday for Senior Day with a matchup against Winona State at 1 pm.
