ST. PAUL, Minn. – The third-ranked Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (6-3, 1-1 NSIC) returns home for a midweek matchup with Minnesota State (8-2, 2-0 NSIC) on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Gangelhoff Center.
Concordia will look to bounce back following a four-set loss on the road at Winona State on Saturday afternoon as the Golden Bears dropped to an even 1-1 in league play on the young season as they also swept Upper Iowa on Thursday at home.
Heather Schiller had another strong weekend as she continued her hot start to the season. The senior hit an efficient .464 in CSP's two matches with 14 kills and just one attack error. Schiller continued to be a force at the net as she added seven more blocks (1.00 per set) to her season total along with eight digs. Her 1.48 blocks per set on the year is good for best in the NSIC through the first few weeks.
The Mavericks coming into town riding high after winning a pair of thrilling five set wins to kick off the conference season. MSU knocked off Winona State at home on Thursday before winning at Upper Iowa on Saturday.
Krista Hassing has been the clear-cut #1 option in the Minnesota State attack so far this season as she has led the NSIC with 4.71 kills per set with a .326 hitting percentage while also ranking fifth in the league with 1.16 blocks per set.
Tuesday's match between the Golden Bears and the Mavericks marks the 25
th time the two schools have met on the volleyball court with Concordia winning 20 of the 24 previous meetings. CSP had won 15 straight in the series from 2003-2011 before Minnesota State broke that streak in 2012 in Mankato. The Mavericks won the first meeting last season in the conference opener in Mankato as MSU handed the Golden Bears their NSIC opener for the first time under head coach
Brady Starkey. CSP responded by sweeping the next match in St. Paul and winning again in four sets in the conference tournament opening round in St. Paul.
In the three matches between the two schools,
Anna Schlaak was impressive as she collected 47 kills (4.27 per set) and hit .430 while also contributing 28 digs (2.55). She hit at least .375 in each match with at least 15 kills.
Taylor Dordan also chipped in a team-best 52 digs (4.73 per set) in those three matches.
