Golden Bears dominate in 3-0 victory over Sioux Falls

CSP out-shot USF 28-8 in the win

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul soccer team (2-4, 1-2 NSIC) picked up their first NSIC win on Sunday afternoon at Sea Foam Stadium as they cruised past Sioux Falls (1-4, 0-3 NSIC) with a score of 3-0. Alahna Anderson netted two goals while Taryn MacMillan added one as well.

The Golden Bears put up their most complete effort of the season as they rode three first half goals to a convincing win over the Cougars. 23 different players saw the field and 14 different players registered a shot as Concordia used a team effort to get into the win column.

It was all Golden Bears in the first half as they dominated possession and kept up the pressure in their offensive end for nearly the entire 45 minutes. Concordia amassed a staggering 17 shots (11 on goal) while holding the Cougars to just four shots (two on goal) in that span.

Taryn MacMillan and Jade Weller paired up in the 16th minute to open the scoring as Weller fed a beautiful pass to MacMillan, who headed the pass over the keeper's head from five yards out to make it 1-0. The goal was MacMillan's first of the year as Weller picked up her second assist.

The Golden Bears continued to pour on the pressure before Alahna Anderson came off the bench and put the game out of reach. Anderson came on in the 30th minute and quickly made her presence known as she buried a right-footed shot from 10 yards out into the back of the net for her first goal of the season as Chelsie Lindsay picked up the lone assist.

Just under four minutes later, Anderson added to the lead with her second goal of the game with a strong left-foot strike from 15 yards that ricocheted off the left post and into the goal to put the Golden Bears up 3-0. The two goals marked the fourth time in her career and first since October 9th of last season that she has scored two goals in a game. In addition, Anderson moved into a tie for eighth in program history with 13 goals in her career.

Concordia remained on the attack for the rest of the half but settled with a comfortable 3-0 lead heading into the break.

The second half evened out a bit more but the Golden Bears continued to create scoring chances and control much of the possession. CSP added 11 more shots (four on goal) in the second half as they finished with a total of 28 shots (15 on goal) for the game.

Concordia's keepers were forced to make a few more plays in the second half as Emma Gartner and Kate Mallory, who came on for Gartner in the 75th minute, each made a few solid saves to keep USF off the board. The pair combined to make five saves on the day as they completed the combined shutout.

Despite not registering on the scoresheet, freshman Brooke Salo was in the middle of a lot of the action as she fired a game-high seven shots and four shots on goal in her 54 minutes of action. McKenzie Buck and Kaitlyn Halvorson also got in on the action as they each put up three shots apiece.

Concordia hits the road next weekend as they travel to Minnesota Crookston on Friday at 4 p.m. and Bemidji State on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Golden Bears return home on Oct. 10-11 as they host U-Mary and Minot State.
