ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul soccer team (1-3) closed out the non-conference slate on a high note with a dramatic 4-3 overtime win against Viterbo University (2-7) on Sunday afternoon at Sea Foam Stadium.
Jessica Bianchi led the Golden Bears with two goals and an assist as she netted the game-winner in the 101
st minute.
The Golden Bears survived a scare as they built up a 3-0 lead in the first half before seeing it erased in the second half before eventually winning it in overtime.
Bianchi played the role of hero in her first career-multi goal game as she also added an assist to make it a five point day.
Several other Golden Bears also had career nights as
Chelsie Lindsay registered her second career multi-point game with a goal and an assist while
Jordan Rowan-Stafford netted her first career goal.
Alahna Anderson also joined in the act as she contributed a pair of assists.
Morgan Courtney shined for the V-Hawks as she put up the game-tying goal at the end of regulation while also adding an assist.
Emma Gartner made four saves as she played the first 67:22 before
Kate Mallory relieved her and finished off the game in net to pick up the win.
Alicia Seachord took the loss for Viterbo as she made three saves on the day.
Concordia finished the day with an advantage in shots at 18-10 but the V-Hawks were more efficient with their shots as they put eight on net compared to seven for CSP.
The Golden Bears wasted little time as they took the lead in the eighth minute on an impressive individual effort from Bianchi. She picked up the ball about 30 yards out from goal, eyed up the keeper and fired a hard shot over the keeper's head to put CSP on the board.
Late in the half, Concordia grew their lead with two goals in the span of just 38 seconds. Bianchi nearly added her second goal in the 37
th minute as she drilled a shot off the post but
Chelsie Lindsay was right there to collect the rebound and deposit it into the back of the net for her first goal of the year.
Shortly after the ball was put back in play, CSP gained possession and
Chelsie Lindsay delivered an excellent cross from the left side of the field as she found
Jordan Rowan-Stafford running to the far post. The freshman received the pass and headed it past the keeper to extend the lead to 3-0 with her first career goal at Concordia.
The chances continued to come for the Golden Bears as the ball remained in the V-Hawks' end of the field for much of the half. Concordia finished the half with 10 shots (four on goal) compared to two (one on goal) for Viterbo.
Concordia continued to dominate possession in the second half, but it was the V-Hawks who were able to find the back of the net. After a Golden Bear foul resulted in a free kick from 40 yards out in the 63
rd minute, Courtney Morgan delivered an excellent ball into the box and Cait Michicich headed it past Gartner for her fifth goal of the season.
Maria Michels cut the lead back to one in the 75
th minute as a deflection put the ball behind the Golden Bear defense and Michels delivered a strike past keeper
Kate Mallory, who came on for Gartner minutes earlier, to make it 3-2.
The V-Hawks completed the comeback in dramatic fashion as Courtney Morgan received a cross from Macie Maulbetsch off a corner in the 88
th minute to even the score at 3-3 and force overtime.
After a quiet first overtime period, Bianchi sent the home fans home happy after taking a feed from
Shannon Wynne and
Alahna Anderson right off the opening kick and sneaking behind the defense down the right side of the field and rolling it past the keeper into the back of the net to give CSP a 4-3 win.
Concordia will return to NSIC play as they close out their six-game home stand this weekend as they host Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sioux Falls on Sunday also at 1 p.m.
