Late season surge culminates in Senior Day sweep

Concordia wins six of last seven games to earn sixth seed in NSIC Tournament

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (21-21, 19-15 NSIC) is surging into postseason play, picking up a series sweep of Sioux Falls (15-35, 12-22 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon for the club's senior day at Barnes Field.

Concordia won the first game 7-1 to clinch the sixth seed in the NSIC / US Bank Tournament. When Augustana (34-15, 25-9) picked up a ninth inning win at Upper Iowa later in the day, the Vikings clinched the third seed as the two teams will meet in the first round at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field on Wednesday, May 6 at 3 p.m.

With a 17-7 second game win in seven innings, the Golden Bears have won six of their last seven entering its third straight conference tournament appearance. Meanwhile, Sioux Falls closed its season dropping the final 14 games.

Last year, Concordia won nine of its last 10 to secure the fourth seed and won eight of 11 and four in a row in 2013 to clinch the fifth seed in the tournament.

The 19 league victories is the second most in a season since the team joined the Northern Sun in the 2000 season with last year's squad setting the record of 20 (20-10).

Like the Golden Bears, Augustana is also surging into postseason play with 12 straight wins with seven games scoring at least 10 runs. The two teams met for a pair of 7-inning games in a doubleheader in Tucson with Augie picking up the sweep with 6-0 and 8-3 wins although Concordia was without the left side of its infield as Eric Fasnacht and Ryan Poppitz were both injured.

In the doubleheader, Andrew Shotwell drove in six runs (three each game) while going 4-6 at the plate with a pair of walks and a pair of doubles (9) and four runs scored. Eric Fasnacht went 3-8 with four runs, five RBI, his 11th double and his sixth home run. Ryan Poppitz went 6-6 with a pair of runs, three RBI and his seventh double.

Seniors Kyle Dalton, Trevon Bargfrede and Tyler Krekling all had solid days at the plate as well on senior day. Dalton went 6-9 with four runs, his ninth double and his third triple of the year. Bargfrede went 1-3 with three runs, two RBI, three walks and his second homer of the year. Krekling was 2-3 with four RBI and a pair of hit by pitch.

In game two, Connor Olson added a 3-4 performance with four runs, an RBI and a walk along with his 11th double.

After winning two games yesterday by scoring 10 total runs on nine hits, the offense exploded today for 26 runs on 29 hits with 12 walks and seven hit by pitch. Additionally, Concordia slugged nine extra base hits including seven in the second game.

With all of the offense, Concordia's pitching staff cruised with run support. In the first game, junior left handed starter Kody Knaus was tagged for a two-out solo home run in the first inning before coasting to a complete game win.

After the home run, Knaus only issued a walk and allowed three scattered singles. Two runners reached scoring position with one of them doubled off third base on a comeback liner of Knaus' foot that popped back up and was caught by second baseman Alex LaPorte for a rare 1-4-3-5 double play.

Knaus improved to 4-2 with the win, striking out four in the process while lowering his ERA to a staff low 4.10 while throwing 60 of 98 pitches for strikes.

In game two, with the sixth seed already clinched and no ability to move up in the standings, the Golden Bears opted to use a prearranged pitching staff with sophomore southpaw Kevin Woebke getting the start.

Woebke was perfect in two innings, striking out a pair of the six batters he faced while throwing 12 of 19 pitches for strikes. He was credited with the victory by prearrangement to improve to 4-3 on the year.

Left handed pitcher Josh Lenz relieved him, setting down the Cougars in order for the next two innings before allowing three runs in the fifth. His final line was three innings, three runs on four hits with a strikeout on just 35 pitches.

After Erik Monson worked the sixth inning, senior right handed reliever Adam Fredericks finished the game, allowing an unearned run on two hits with a strikeout.

The Cougars were led in the doubleheader by Matthew Minnick who went 3-7 with his ninth home run. Ed Reichenbach finished his big series by hitting his third home run of the weekend and fifth of the season while going 2-5 at the plate. His season average began the weekend at .152, climbing 42 points to .194.

Henry Ojeda took the game one loss for USF, falling to 2-7 after allowing five runs (three earned) in five innings. Dylan Gavin took the game two loss in his first start of the year as Concordia scored 10 runs (seven earned) in 4.1 innings as he falls to 1-2.
