Baseball snaps skid with a split with Winona State

Golden Bears score crucial late season split

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul (16-20, 14-14 NSIC) was able to snap a seven game losing streak on Saturday afternoon at Barnes Field by defeating Winona State (18-23, 16-12 NSIC) 8-7 in the second game of a doubleheader after dropping the first 12-3.

The victory combined with other Northern Sun action slots the Golden Bears into eighth in the league standings with six games to play, trailing the Warriors by two games with the teams scheduled to complete their four game series tomorrow at noon at Barnes Field. The games will be available to watch live online with play-by-play by Dan Flanagan.

GAME 1: Winona State 12, Concordia 3
The Golden Bears scored first and led 1-0 after the first inning with a two-out rally. After Kyle Dalton reached on a bunt single on the first pitch he saw, he was erased on a double play on the next pitch. A two out single to center by Connor Olson was followed by a walk to Eric Fasnacht which set up a Ryan Poppitz RBI single.

Dalton had a big day at the plate, going 4-6 with two doubles (8), two runs, two RBI and three walks. Olson went 3-8 with a pair of RBI and a run while Poppitz was 2-6 wiht a run and RBI. Fasnacht also socked his 10th double of the year.

In the top of the second, Winona State reversed the momentum with a four run inning and carried the 4-1 lead through four innings.

The Warriors added four more runs in the fifth to take a commanding 8-1 lead. The Golden Bears responded with two more in the bottom of the inning but WSU added two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings.

In the first game, Dalton went 2-2 with a pair of walks, his seventh double and a run.

Zach Rengel took the loss, falling to 3-3 as he worked five innings, allowing eight runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

Chase Blazier went the distance for the Warriors, allowing three runs (two earned) over seven innings. Concordia had seven hits and three walks against him and only struck out twice as he improved to 4-3.

The first four hitters in WSU's lineup did the damage, combining to go 9-17 with nine runs and five RBI. Second hitter Jordan Plamann delivered his third home run of the year.

GAME 2: Concordia 8, Winona State 7
The Golden Bears put up the big second inning in game two, jumping out to a 4-0 lead as Trevon Bargfrede and Kyle Dalton each hit RBI doubles and Adam Hildebrandt had reached on a sacrifice bunt to score a run with runners on first and third.

Hildebrandt's one out double to the opposite field gap in left center started a two run rally in the fourth inning with Connor Olson delivering the big hit in the inning, a two run single to center which also scored Dalton with two outs.

The Warriors came back with a strong fifth inning against starter Kevin Woebke, scoring six times including Tyler Nehring's three run home run.

Woebke rebounded from the big WSU inning by getting six of the next seven hitters out including three via strikeouts with the only hit an infield single.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Golden Bears rallied to take the lead starting with a leadoff single to left by Ryan Poppitz followed by a Bargfrede walk. David Henke reached on a sacrifice bunt with WSU failing to throw out Poppitz at third to load the bases.

Dalton delivered a run scoring fielder's choice, his speed forcing the Warriors to bobble the exchange for an inning ending double play attempt which allowed Henke to score on a delayed steal of home with Dalton retreating back to first.

With two runs in and the lead, Concordia turned to Yuji Suzuki in relief of Woebke. Winona State manufactured a run with a leadoff single in the eighth inning, but Suzuki retired the next six batters to earn his third save of the year.

Woebke improved to 3-3 with the win, allowing six runs on 12 hits in seven innings. He struck out seven and didn't walk anyone.

Scott Freiburger took the loss in relief, allowing two runs over three innings, allowing three hits and two walks with four strikeouts to fall to 2-2. The Golden Bears squared up Warrior starter Will Lundquist for six runs on seven hits and three walks in four innings, although he wouldn't factor into the decision.

Dalton went 2-4 with two RBI and his eighth double, Olson went 2-5 with two RBI and Bargfrede went 2-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Jordan Plamann went 4-5 for WSU while three others had two-hit games.
