ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul baseball (7-9, 5-3 NSIC) will embark on a six game road stand this week starting with a Tuesday doubleheader at Wayne State (12-8, 7-1 NSIC) at 1:30 p.m. at Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne, Neb.
Concordia looks to snap a three game losing streak while also snapping Wayne State's six game winning streak. Concordia had won its previous five games before falling three straight times to Minnesota Duluth to close last weekend's series.
Wayne State swept Northern State in four games over the weekend in Wayne, Neb. and took three of four from Minot State on NSIC opening weekend to build its 7-1 league record.
The Golden Bears are 7-33 all-time against the Wildcats but five of Concordia's wins over Wayne State have been on the road with a 5-19 record in Wayne, Neb. WSC has won the last nine contests and 13 of the last 14 with a seven game home winning streak over Concordia. Concordia's last win over Wayne State was April 1, 2010, a 7-2 game two victory of a doubleheader in St. Paul, Minn. The teams haven't met since 2012.
Concordia is led by
Eric Fasnacht who ranks fifth in the league in slugging (.750), 11th in hitting (.404) and 19th in on base percentage (.458). He leads the league in runs per game (1.21), is second in RBI (1.36) and ranks among the top-10 in home runs, triples and stolen bases. He's also the 14th toughest player to strikeout in the conference with just 0.29 strikeouts per game. In 14 games, he's driven in 19, scored 17 and delivered 10 extra base hits (5-2-3) with just four strikeouts in 52 at bats.
Kyle Dalton paces the lineup from the leadoff spot, adding a .400 average (24-60) with five stolen bases and 13 runs scored. Like Fasnacht, he's difficult to whiff with five strikeouts in 60 at bats. Freshman
Connor Olson hits cleanup, a spot ahead of Fasnacht and is hitting .385/.439/.558 and is also a tough guy to K with five in 52 at bats. He has seven extra base hits including a team-leading six doubles while his 14 RBI are second on the team.
Of the seven pitchers who have started a game this season, junior right hander
Cody Schacht and sophomore southpaw
Erik Monson were the two who did not pitch in the UMD weekend series. Schacht is 1-1 with a 7.36 ERA in two starts including a 9-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio while Monson is 0-0 with a 10.57 ERA in one start and one relief appearance covering 7.2 innings with six strikeouts.
The Wildcats are led by early season slugger Nathan Ackerman who leads the league in home runs (8), triples (3), slugging percentage (.868) and RBI (29) while hitting .382 with 18 of his 29 hits going for extra bases.
Of the six Wayne State pitchers with starts on the season, Nick Ragan and Curtis Bussard are the two who didn't start last weekend as WSC has used the same weekend rotation twice in a row. Ragan, a senior right hander is 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA in three appearances (one start) over 10.0 innings with 14 hits allowed along with a .368 opponent average. Bussard, a junior lefty is 0-3 in six appearances (two starts) over 10.1 innings. He's held opponents to a .277 average and has struck out 16 batters but has also issued nine walks and carries a 9.58 ERA.
