TUCSON, Ariz. - Redshirt freshman
Andrew Shotwell made his college baseball debut on Wednesday in his third year as a Golden Bear. It was worth the wait as he delivered a walk-off RBI double in the 10th inning in a 9-8 win in Concordia's (1-0) season opener against Minot State (2-4) at Kino Sports Complex.
It was Shotwell's first career at bat as a college baseball player after redshirting in his first year and missing the 2014 campaign with a medical redshirt.
He entered Wednesday's game in the top of the ninth inning as a defensive replacement in left field. In the bottom of the 10th, he stepped into the batter's box after sophomore
Kevin Woebke was hit by pitch. With a 1-0 count, Shotwell slugged a double to left with Woebke racing home and beating the relay throw.
The Golden Bears' season opener played more like a basketball game with three ties and seven lead changes. Concordia scored a run in six of the 10 innings with Minot State scoring in four frames but producing multiple runs three times.
Despite the frequency of scoring, the teams only scored in the same inning twice.
Senior
Kyle Dalton paced the Concordia lineup going 3-6 wiht three RBI from the leadoff spot.
Joe Muench,
Eric Fasnacht and
Kevin Woebke all had two hits from the 4-5-6 spots in the order as Concordia scratched out 14 hits, drew seven walks and three hit by pitch.
But Concordia left 15 runners on base including nine in scoring position.
The Golden Bears took a 7-6 lead into the ninth inning as Fasnacht delivered an RBI single to right center to score
Ryan Poppitz. Concordia left runners on second and third with one out, missing a chance to add to the lead.
In the ninth, sophomore left hander
Josh Lenz retired Minot State's leadoff hitter Kyle Williamson who entered the game hitting .429 to start the year. After a one out single, Lenz induced a grounder to second by third hitter Jared Young who came in hitting .474.
With two outs, cleanup hitter Jordan Schulz pulled a home go-ahead home run to right field to give Minot State an 8-7 lead. Lenz pitched out of a bases loaded jam after the homer to keep the score within one run.
Lenz was solid in three relief innings, allowing two runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts. He retired the first four batters he faced in relief of starter
Yuji Suzuki.
Lenz and Suzuki did not factor in the decision. Suzuki worked six innings in his first start of the year, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits. He had solid control, walking only one while throwing 55 of 87 pitches for strikes.
Concordia rallied in the ninth inning as
David Henke reached on an error with
Alex LaPorte moving him to second on his second sacrifice bunt of the day. Dalton delivered a single to left, scoring Henke to tie the game. After
Tyler Krekling reached getting hit by a pitch, Poppitz hit a line drive single up the middle off the umpire to load the bases with one out.
A missed suicide squeeze forced Dalton to get out in a run down between third and home and Muench hit a chopper back to the pitcher to send the game into extra innings.
Concordia turned to right hander
Tyler Schmitz in the 10th inning, as he struck out two in a scoreless frame, getting credit for the win in his debut after Shotwell delivered the game winning in the bottom of the inning.
Alec Grothe took the loss for Minot State, allowing one run in one inning of work as Minot's fourth pitcher of the game.
Concordia continues its spring trip at the Tucson Invitational Games on Thursday with a non-conference contest against Southwest Minnesota State at 8:30 p.m. central time.
