Late rally comes up short for men's basketball

Golden Bears trim 14-point 2nd half deficit down to one, but buzzer beater falls short

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (15-10, 11-8 NSIC) trailed by 14 points with six and a half minutes to play to Upper Iowa (15-10, 11-8 NSIC) before a 17-4 run over the next six minutes made it a one-point game with 25 seconds left. But visiting Upper Iowa held on for an 86-84 win over the Golden Bears as Terez VanPelt's shot from mid court was short at the buzzer.

The Golden Bears and Peacocks are now tied for third in the NSIC South Division with UIU holding the season sweep for the head-to-head tiebreaker. Concordia hosts Winona State (9-10, 5th) tomorrow at 6 p.m. for senior day. The Warriors picked up their first road win of the year in 11 games and are 17-0 all-time at Gangelhoff Center while Concordia has dropped three of its last four after winning nine of its previous 11 contests.

VanPelt had just buried a three-pointer with under four seconds left to make it 85-84, with Upper Iowa's Luke Lenhart making one of two at the foul line with 2.6 seconds to go. Keith Crockett rebounded the second free throw, and after play was stopped to review time, the Golden Bears had the ball on the opposite end of the court to set up the VanPelt miss at the horn.

VanPelt made both shots that cut the margin to a point, also hitting a jumper just outside the lane with 25 seconds left. He finished with 13 points on 5-9 shooting.

Crockett, who recorded his first career 20-point game on Tuesday at Minnesota State with 21, topped that by a point with a game and career-high 22 points on 7-10 shooting including 2-4 three-point shooting. he added six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

He led three Golden Bears with 20-plus point games as Cole Olstad had 21 points, nine rebounds, four steals, two blocks and two assists and Nuni Omot had 20 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Concordia forced 17 Peacock turnovers via 14 steals but the Concordia offense committed 20 miscues on the evening as the two teams scored 24 points off of each other's turnovers.

Concordia out-shot Upper Iowa 50.0 percent (27-54) to 43.3 percent (26-60) but the Peacocks buried 12 three-pointers (12-30, 40.0%) to Concordia's five (5-13, 38.5%).

While Upper Iowa was busy from the arc, with half of its shots being three-pointers, Concordia was playing a more physical and attacking style inside. Only 13 of Concordia's shots were three-pointers as the Golden Bears racked up a 40-24 edge in the paint and got to the foul line 11 more times. But the extra free throws only resulted in three more points as Concordia was 25-35 (71.4%) while Upper Iowa was nearly perfect at 22-24 (91.7%).

For Upper Iowa, it was Jernell Hughes doing the most damage from the arc, hitting 5-8 from three-point range for 17 points to lead a Peacock bench that outscored Concordia's 46-8.

The game was played with high intensity from the opening tip until the final buzzer and it was Concordia who had the early upper hand as Omot took over in the early stages. He scored eight points in the first six-plus minutes for a 14-8 lead and made six of his first seven shots of the game for 16 points at the break.

But it was Upper Iowa who into halftime ahead, leading by 11 after a 17-5 run in the last six minutes gave them the double-digit lead.

Upper Iowa led by at least eight points from the two minute mark of the first half until Concordia started its late game run in the last six and a half minutes. UIU pushed the lead up to 15 with 12 minutes left (62-47).
