ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (3-8) snapped a six game losing streak on Wednesday night, defeating Saint John's 88-54 at Gangelhoff Center in Concordia's final non-conference game of the year.
Cole Olstad and
Bryndan Matthews led seven Concordia players to score at least eight points with 15 apiece, combining to shoot 12-18 from the field and 4-7 from the arc.
For the Johnnies, the game was included in their exhibition season and does not affect their overall record, although they are 8-1 on the year in regular season play.
Concordia will head to Minnesota Duluth (Romano Gym) and St. Cloud State (Halenbeck Hall) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively for a pair of 4 p.m. tips in Northern Sun play. More on the series of each game is available at the end of this story.
Concordia led for the entire night as the Johnnies had a pair of starters unavailable and the other three played a combined 17 minutes. The Golden Bears seized the opportunity in putting together a dominant offensive and defensive effort.
The Golden Bears posted a season-high 22 assists with a 22-12 assist-turnover ratio and forced 15 SJU miscues leading to a 26-9 edge in points off turnovers. That contributed to a season-best 58.2 percent (32-55) shooting effort including a season-high 11 three-pointers at a 45.8 percent clip.
Defensively, Concordia produced a season-best 35.2 percent (19-54) opponent field goal percentage and a season-low four three-pointers (4-13, .308) to go with the 15 forced turnovers.
In the paint, the Golden Bears had eight blocked shots and a 36-31 rebounding advantage and had 14 offensive rebounds on just 29 missed shots resulting in rebound opportunities.
Five players scored in double figures and seven players scored at least eight points led by
Cole Olstad and
Bryndan Matthews with 15 apiece. Olstad added seven rebounds, four assists, two steals a block and only one turnover while hitting 6-10 from the floor and 2-5 from the arc. Matthews was 6-8 from the field and 2-2 from the arc, adding a pair of rebounds and assists, a steal and a block.
Matt Ambriz delivered four three-pointers and 14 points to lead a Concordia bench that outscored the SJU bench 44-27. Freshmen
Brandon McRoy and
OC Omoregie each scored 11 as well and
Josh Monroy scored eight points with seven rebounds and two blocks.
The Johnnies were led by David Stockman's 13 points including three three-pointers and he was the only starter to clear 20 minutes with 23. Garrett Goetz dished out six assists while playing a game-high 34 minutes and John Oliver had six points and seven rebounds.
SERIES QUICK NOTES VS UMD & SCSU- CSP is 11-13 against UMD all-time including three straight wins and seven of the last nine in the series.
