Warriors edge Golden Bears in defensive slugfest

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (2-6, 0-3 NSIC) shot 21.4 percent (6-28) in the second half, coming up short 59-50 to Winona State (4-4, 3-1 NSIC) on Friday night at Gangelhoff Center.

Concordia remains at home tomorrow for Day of Heroes against Upper Iowa with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. The festivities will be highlighted by a recognition of football senior Hank Goff as the Disney Sports Spirit Award winner as well as an ROTC scholarship presentation to Cadet Malcuit at halftime.

The Golden Bears were 0-13 from the arc in the contest, the first time the team went without making a three-pointer since December 29, 2005 in a 62-57 win over Nebraska-Omaha, going 0-7 at Gangelhoff Center.

Concordia took a 31-30 lead into the break and held the Warriors scoreless for the first eight and a half minutes of the second half.

But Concordia was only able to pull ahead by nine points, 39-30 on a monster put-back dunk by Josh Monroy for Concordia's largest lead of the night.

From there, the Golden Bears went cold as the Warriors went on a 16-2 run over the next six minutes to turn the tables for a 48-43 lead with 5:32 to play in the game.

A three-point play by Bryndan Matthews was followed by Shea Mandli finishing in the paint to tie the game at 48 with under five minutes to go.

Matthews scored a team-high 13 points on 5-10 shooting while Mandli had his second double-double of the year with 10 points and 12 rebounds including 6-7 foul shooting.

Winona State countered with five straight points and Concordia would not have a possession with a chance to tie or take the lead the rest of the way.

Mike Yahnke was Concordia's third player in double-figures in scoring with a season-high 10 points on 4-7 shooting in a strong performance.

Winona State was led by Kyl eBauman with 17 points and Riley Bambenek with 16. The two combined to shoot 14-27 while the rest of the Warriors were just 9-30.
