BAYAMON, P.R. – The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (0-1) dropped their season opener to Puerto Rico-Bayamon (1-0) on Friday afternoon.
Kyrah Fredenburg collected her first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.
The Golden Bears trailed from start to finish as they trailed by as many as 25 before surging late to cut the deficit to 10 at the final buzzer. Concordia connected on just 29.6% (21-71) from the floor while Bayamon hit 37.7%. UPRB was especially effective from beyond the arc as they hit 38.5% (10-26) compared to 20.0% (5-25) for CSP.
Despite the loss, the Golden Bears were impressive on the glass as they out-rebounded UPRB 53-46, including an impressive 21-11 advantage on the offensive boards. The two teams were nearly even with turnovers as Concordia committed 18 while Bayamon had 17. Both teams got to the free throw line 24 times as CSP hit 13 and UPRB hit 14.
Along with Fredenburg's productive night, Concordia put three other starters in double figures scoring, led by Nicole Parson's 11 points. Parsons also added eight boards as she nearly double-doubled as well.
Anna Schmitt filled the box score with 10 points, eight rebounds and a game-high five steals in her collegiate debut.
Mishayla Jones rounded out the quartet in double figures as she also chipped in 10 points.
Puerto Rico-Bayamon also had balanced scoring with five players putting up double digit scoring, led by Annelise Vargas and her 14 points. She hit 5-10 from the field and 4-6 from three point range. Natalie Diaz and Daneichka Canales each had a dozen points as well.
The Golden Bears got off to a bit of a slow start from the floor in the first quarter as they had just four field goals, including three three-pointers, to go into the second quarter down 22-12.
UPR Bayamon added to their lead with a three to open the second to push their advantage to 13 before CSP battled back and closed the gap to single digits. The Golden Bears continued to hang in it until a 6-0 run late in the quarter turned a nine point deficit to the largest of the half at 37-22. Concordia hit a pair of buckets before the break to make it 37-26.
The third quarter began with another bucket for CSP to bring it back to within nine before UPRB took over. They went on a huge 14-1 run to run out to a big lead before eventually pushing it to 23 for their largest lead of the period heading into the fourth with a 58-35.
The lead reached the largest of the night early in the fourth as Bayamon buried the first basket of the period to make it a 25 point gap. Concordia showed some real resilience the rest of the way to make a game of it as they slowly cut into the lead throughout the final quarter. Overall, CSP outscored UPRB by an impressive 25-12 mark in the fourth to bring the Golden Bears to within 10 at the final whistle.
Concordia will look to claim their first win of the young season tomorrow afternoon as they take on Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras.
