ST. PAUL, Minn. - The #1 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (22-4, 16-2 NSIC) will close out the regular season this weekend as they host Sioux Falls (13-4, 5-13 NSIC) on Friday and #2 Southwest Minnesota State (23-3, 16-2 NSIC) on Saturday for Senior Day.
SENIOR DAY... On Saturday afternoon, the Golden Bears will honor their two seniors,
Taylor Dordan and
Heather Schiller, with a brief ceremony prior to the start of the match. Both players have been solid contributors over their four years with the Golden Bears as they have helped guide the team to a pair of national championships. Dordan currently ranks fourth in program history with 1,677 career digs while Schiller ranks second all-time with 1.15 blocks per set.
PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS... The Golden Bears head into the final weekend season in a three-way tie with Northern State and Southwest Minnesota State as the three teams vie to host the NSIC Tournament. With Concordia hosting the Mustangs on Saturday in the final day of the regular season, the site of the league's postseason tournament could very well be decided by the outcome of the match.
THE MATCHUPS... Friday's matchup between Concordia and Sioux Falls marks the 10th meeting between the two schools. The two programs met four times in the 1990's with USF winning three of the four meetings, but CSP has won all five meetings since the Cougars joined the NSIC in 2012.
In the meeting earlier this year, he Golden Bears' offense was firing on all cylinders as they hit .362 as a team, with three different players hitting over .570 on the day. CSP had 43 kills on 94 attacks while committing just nine errors in the win. Concordia was consistent on the day as they hit at least .345 in each set.
Emma Lange put up an impressive performance as she led Concordia with 11 kills and a career-best .688 hitting percentage. She also chipped in five blocks.
On Saturday for Senior Day, the Golden Bears and Mustangs meet for the 53rd time in their extensive rivalry. Overall, the series has been pretty even with Concordia holding a 29-22-1 advantage in their previous meetings, but CSP has dominated since 2002, going 29-4 during that span. The Golden Bears continued that trend last season by winning the first two meetings, but the Mustangs got the big win as they ended Concordia's season in the NCAA Central Region semifinals.
In the meeting back in September, against one of the stronger defenses in the country, the Golden Bears amassed one of their best offensive performances of the year as they hit .317. They got better as the match went on as their hitting percentages by set went -.042 in the first, .303 in the second, .361 in the third and .593 in the fourth.
Emma Lange shined for the Golden Bears as her 13 kills led the way for the squad. She hit an impressive .458 for the match as her 13 kills came on just 24 attempts. Lange also added a pair of blocks.
LAST TIME OUT... The Golden Bears picked up a huge weekend sweep over a pair of ranked opponents as they knocked off #3 Wayne State in four sets and #20 Augustana in five.
Concordia was impressive on both offense and defense as they hit .296 as a team for the two matches while holding opponents to a .200 hitting percentage.
Kasey Williams was once again solid as she picked up her 13th and 14th double-doubles on the season. She put up at least 54 assists and 12 digs in each match, including a season-high 64 assists on Saturday.
HISTORIC WEEKEND...
Riley Hanson as she became the 17th member of the 1,000 kill club at Concordia in Friday's win before setting a single-match career high with 24 kills on Saturday. Overall, Hanson had 43 kills, good for 4.78 per set, while hitting an efficient .513 in the two matches. She also added 12 blocks, 1.33 per set, to complete a well-rounded performance against a pair of opponents ranked inside the top-20.
NCAA STATISTICAL LEADERS... Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, several players rank near the top statistically on the national level.
Kasey Williams went into the week registering in at third in assists per set at 12.35 while
Riley Hanson has moved up to sixth in NCAA DII with her .414 hitting percentage.
Heather Schiller comes in at 11th in the nation with 1.33 blocks per set on the year as well. As a team, CSP also ranks third in assists per set (13.74), sixth in kills per set (14.48) and eighth in hitting percentage (.278).
