WAYNE, Neb. – The Concordia-St. Paul soccer team (6-8, 5-6 NSIC) dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Wayne State (2-9-3, 2-8-1 NSIC) on Sunday afternoon. Valerie Hernandez's goal for the Wildcats in the 63
rd minute proved to be the game's only goal.
For the second consecutive game, the Golden Bears out-shot their opponent but weren't able to turn it into goals as their 11 shots compared to just eight for WSC weren't enough. The Golden Bears finished with four shots on goal while Wayne State was more efficient with their shots with five on goal.
Emma Gartner took a tough luck loss in goal for the Golden Bears as she made four saves on five shots in the defeat. She was outdone by WSC's Kylie Comba as Comba made four saves in the shutout win.
Jessica Bianchi was active on the offensive end with three shots, including two on goal, to lead the way.
Chelsie Lindsay also registered two shots, with one on goal as well.
The first half was a defensive battle as neither team was able to get much going on the offensive side of the field. The Wildcats nearly struck in the seventh minute as Karlee Hall launched a shot towards the CSP net but it hit the post as it remained scoreless. Brooke Buzzell followed up with a shot on goal off the rebound but Gartner turned it away as well. Concordia's only shot on goal in the half came a few minutes later as
McKenzie Buck put one on net in the 12
th minute but Kylie Comba stood tall and made the save. The chances were far and far between the rest of the half as both defenses looked up to the task as the game went into the half scoreless.
That trend continued early in the second half until the 63
rd minute when Valerie Hernandez received a cross from Carys Hund right out in front and put it home to give Wayne State the first goal of the game for her first goal of the year.
The Golden Bears turned up the pressure for the final half an hour of the game but were stymied by the defensive unit for Wayne State. WSC's Kylie Comba stopped every attempt on net as she held Concordia off the scoreboard and secured the shutout and gave the Wildcats a 1-0 win.
Concordia will look to get back in the win column next weekend as they return home to take on St. Cloud State on Friday night and Minnesota Duluth on Sunday afternoon.
