SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Concordia-St. Paul (8-6, 4-4 NSIC) was unable to pick up its first road win of the season in an 80-65 loss at #12 Augustana (14-1, 8-1 NSIC) on Friday night at Sioux Falls Arena. The loss also snaps Concordia's three game winning streak, gives the Vikings a season sweep and extends Augie's winning streak to seven which began against Concordia on December 6.
The Golden Bears will search for their first road win tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Wayne State at Rice Auditorium.
Concordia's bench outscored Augustana's 29-2 on the night but all five Viking starters scored at least seven and four of them scored 13-plus.
The Vikings led throughout as Daniel Jansen scored a pair of free throws 11 seconds into the game before a
Mike Yahnke jumper tied it at 2-2. Casey Schilling converted in the lane two minutes into the game and Augustana led the rest of the night.
Jansen, who struggled to 2-11 shooting and eight points with four turnovers in the first meeting at Gangelhoff Center, was able to reverse his fortune against Concordia tonight. He led all players with 22 points including 11-11 free throw shooting, also dishing out three assists. Schilling added 19 points for Augie.
The final 15-point margin is a wider mark than the game indicated, though. The Vikings claimed their largest lead of the first half at 35-26 with 4:15 to play until the break before Concordia got hot.
A big one-handed dunk in traffic by
Mike Yahnke put the junior at the line after the contact as he converted a three-point play.
Keith Crockett hit a pair of free throws and a three-pointer for an 8-0 Concordia run in about a minute of play with 1:29 to go until the break.
The Vikings closed out the half with four straight points to push the lead back to five, 39-34.
That was the story of the game for Concordia as the Golden Bears made numerous strong pushes at the Augustana lead but couldn't force a tie or claim a lead.
Redshirt freshman swingman
Nuni Omot led Concordia in the first half with 11 points on 4-4 shooting. He finished the night with 11, only attempting one second half shot but grabbing six boards for the evening.
Concordia came out strong in the second half as Crockett continued his scoring spree with the first bucket of the period as he scored seven of his 10 points during the end of the first and beginning of the second half.
Terez VanPelt added a jumper to bring the margin back to one at 39-38 just over two minutes into the half.
Crockett also had four assists while VanPelt also finished with 10 points to leave him two points shy of tying
Brian Jamros (2001-05) for third on the career scoring list with 1,371 points. VanPelt also had four assists and two steals.
Augie pushed it back to six over the next minute before flexing the lead to 10 points for the first time at 50-40 with 14:25 to play during an 11-2 stretch spanning three-plus minutes.
A three-pointer by
Cole Olstad for three of his nine points was followed by
Adam Petterson drawing a foul on a three-pointer, converting all three at the line to cut it back to four, 50-46 with 13:13 to go.
Olstad added a team-high seven rebounds to go with his nine points.
After Augustana pushed the lead back to eight (54-46), Concordia trimmed it back to three when
David Stanley knocked down a corner three followed by a Petterson layup.
Augustana turned it on once again, responding with perhaps the most decisive mini-run of the game with eight straight points to push the lead to a new high, 11 at 62-51 although plenty of time (8:18) still remained.
This time, Concordia didn't have an answer as Augustana would push the lead to 15 with five minutes left (71-56) which was the largest lead of the evening.
Concordia held the Vikings to 23.5 percent (4-17) three-point shooting but Augie converted 22-24 at the line (91.7%) and made 23-40 inside the arc. The Vikings also had a 21-to-12 assist-turnover ratio compared to Concordia's 13-to-16 line.
Shea Mandli led Concordia's bench with eight points, four rebounds and a block as he played 22 minutes. He was 3-5 from the floor.
