Olstad's hot shooting propels Golden Bears to 19-point road win

Olstad scores 21 points on 4 3-pointers, Sobaski buries 3 3-pointers off the bench

CROOKSTON, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (10-6, 6-4 NSIC) picked up a second consecutive road victory with a 72-53 win at Minnesota Crookston (6-9, 4-7 NSIC) on Friday night at Lysaker Gymnasium.

The Golden Bears, who dropped their first four road contests of the year, have now put together back-to-back road wins and will play at Bemidji State (7-8, 3-8 NSIC) tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Sanford Center. The Beavers dropped their fourth game in a row tonight against #21 Minnesota State.

Concordia pulled away in the second half by extending a 7-point lead (42-35) to a 17-point lead with 8-straight points from Cole Olstad before a pair of three-pointers from Jon Sobaski capped a 14-4 run with just over nine minutes left to play.

The Golden Bears led by as many as 21 points late in the game.

Olstad led Concordia with 21 points for his second straight 20-plus point game. He made 4-5 from three-point range and 6-8 from the field, adding four rebounds and two blocked shots.

His hot shooting led Concordia to a 10-22 three-point shooting evening, hitting five in each half while holding UMC to 28.0 percent (7-25) three-point shooting on its home floor.

Sobaski's nine points all came off three-pointers (3-4) led a Concordia bench that outscored UMC's bench 18-11. Eight different players scored at least four points for Concordia in the game.

Nuni Omot had a strong final six and a half minutes, with eight of his 14 points and five of his 10 rebounds down the stretch to help close out the Golden Eagles. Five of his 10 rebounds were on the offensive glass on the night.

He led Concordia's offensive rebounding effort with a 14-3 advantage which led to a 16-3 margin in second chance scoring.

After falling behind early, Concordia methodically opened up a double-digit first half lead, closing out the half on a 7-0 run with a pair of mid-range jumpers by Keith Crockett surrounding an Omot three-pointer.

The 7-0 spurt in the final of the half was part of a 17-5 run spanning 7:40 that turned an 18-17 lead into the 35-22 halftime score.

Concordia held the lead for 16:33 of the opening 20 minutes and for all 20 minutes of the second half. UMC's last lead of the game was at 10-9 with 14:19 to play in the first half. The Golden Eagles did open the game with an early 7-3 lead just under two minutes into play before Concordia's defense took over.

Concordia forced the Golden Eagles to attempt 17 first half three-pointers as the hosts made just four (23.5%). Concordia was more efficient, hitting half of its 10 first half long range attempts and making 48.3 percent (14-29) from the field while limiting UMC to 36.0 percent (9-25) first half shooting.

Seven different players scored at least three points in the opening half for the Golden Bears led by Terez VanPelt who scored all eight of his points in the first half. The depth allowed Concordia's bench to outscore UMC's 12-3, and kept the team fresh as Concordia committed just three first half turnovers to open an 8-0 scoring advantage off turnovers.

For the night, Concordia turned it over just nine times while forcing 11.

Minnesota Crookston was led by Derrick Redd and Kevin Larson with 15 points each. Redd was 7-7 from the field while Larson was 5-8 from the floor and 3-6 from three-point range.

The rest of the Golden Eagles combined for 10-32 shooting for the night.
