Lange leads CU past Missouri S&T to close out the weekend

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia University volleyball team (4-0) completed an undefeated weekend in the Radisson Hotel Roseville Volleyball Clash with a four set win (25-14, 25-8, 22-25, 25-13) over Missouri S&T (1-3) on Saturday night.

Emma Lange was dominant for the second straight match as she set another career high with 22 kills while committing just one error. Her .677 hitting percentage was second best in program history in a match with 20+ kills.

Heather Schiller also had a solid match with 12 kills and a .423 hitting percentage along with four digs. Mariya Sampson added her first career double-double double as she set career highs in both kills with 10 and digs with 14. Anna Schlaak just missed out on her third straight double-double with 10 kills and nine digs.

Kasey Williams continued the trend of setting career highs as she picked up 49 assists and tied her career best with 15 digs. Lisa Atkinson also joined in the fun with a career high 16 digs to lead the team and Taylor Dordan chipped in 13 digs as well.

Concordia's defense put in another strong effort as they held the Miners to just .082 hitting while hitting .333 themselves.

The Miners were led by Allison Mueller's nine kills while Krista Haslag and Jackie Zellmer each added seven. Setter Allie Plunk chipped in 25 assists while libero Jackie Pyles contributed a match-high 20 digs.

The opening set remained tight with Missouri S&T holding a 13-12 lead before the Golden Bears surged with a 13-1 run to pull away with a 25-14 set win. Lange got off to a quick start with six kills on eight attempts and Atkinson added six digs to lead the way in the set.

The Golden Bears rode the wave into the second set by scoring 11 of the first 12 points. The Miners cut the lead back to six but were unable to close the gap any more as Concordia comfortably rolled to a 25-8 win and a 2-0 lead. Riley Hanson paced the Bears with four kills in the set.

Missouri S&T wouldn't go away, though, as they battled back in the third set. The Miners maintained a small lead for much of the match but fell behind 22-21 as CU looked to close out the sweep. The Miners rebounded with four straight points to hand Concordia their first set loss and send the match to a fourth set.

Concordia came out fired up in the fourth set looking determined to close out the final match of the weekend. They quickly built a 9-3 lead and didn't allow Missouri S&T to pull closer than three points the rest of the way. CU closed out the match with a strong 8-2 run to cap a solid weekend with a 25-13 set win.

The Golden Bears travel to Denver next weekend to play in the Colorado Premier Challenge before returning home to open the NSIC regular season.
