ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia University soccer team (1-4, 1-2 NSIC) picked up their first win of the season with a 3-1 win at Sioux Falls (0-5-1, 0-3-0 NSIC) on Sunday afternoon.
Taryn MacMillan scored her first two goals for the Golden Bears to lead the way.
MacMillan has been snake bitten so far this season as she has hit the post several times but wasted no time putting Concordia on top. She opened the scoring just 2:39 into the game on a penalty kick. The junior transfer followed up the goal with another one less than two minutes later on a header from
McKenzie Buck and Jess Bianchi.
The two goal cushion was all that goalkeeper
Emma Gartner (1-4) needed to pick up the win. Gartner finished with five saves while only conceding one goal in the win.
The wind played a pretty big factor in the game as all four goals were scored by the team with the wind at their back. Concordia out-shot the Cougars by a lopsided 10-3 margin (7-1 on goal) in the first half as the ball remained in their half of the field for much of the first 45 minutes. In the 34
th minute,
Emily Ecklund fired a corner out in front of the net that deflected off a Sioux Falls players into the back of the net to extend the lead to three.
The first half was very reminiscent of the last meeting between these two teams as Concordia built the decisive lead early in the first half in that game as well.
The momentum shifted in the second half with the wind as the Cougars controlled possession much more. USF fired 12 shots compared to five for CU and put five on net compared to one after the break. The shift in pressure did nothing to change the score though for most of the half as the CU defense was up to the test. The Golden Bears looked to be headed to a shutout until a penalty for USF resulted in a Ciara Howerton goal in the 82
nd minute. The Golden Bears shut the door the rest of the way to pick up the win.
Concordia will look to carry the momentum into homecoming weekend as they play host to Minnesota Crookston on Friday at 7 p.m. and Bemidji State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
