ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Concordia University softball team (12-20, 7-5 NSIC) picked up a split against MSU Moorhead (7-12, 3-7 NSIC) on Sunday. The Dragons won game one 1-0 on a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh and the Golden Bears used a pair of runs in the sixth to take game two 2-1.
Linzy Heim (7-7) continued her solid run in the circle as she only allowed two runs combined in 13.2 innings of work while allowing 15 hits and striking out 12. She threw all 27.2 innings for CU on the weekend with a 1.27 ERA while going 3-1.
Teona Zepeda went 4-6 with a pair of steals and
Emily Shinn went 2-4 with two doubles and a pair of walks to lead the Golden Bear offense.
GAME ONE: MSU Moorhead 1, Concordia-St. Paul 0
Concordia put runners in scoring position in the first and second innings but were unable to break through and put a run on the board.
Both pitchers held the offenses in check as neither team was able to get anything going until the bottom of the seventh.
The Dragons broke the tie in the seventh was a two-out, walk-off RBI double to give MSUM the win in game one.
Zepeda picked up three of the team's four hits in the game and Shinn had the other hit as she also walked twice. The only other Golden Bear to reach base was
Liz Jarosz with a walk in the first.
Heim allowed nine hits and struck out six in the loss.
GAME TWO: Concordia-St. Paul 2, MSU Moorhead 1
Both teams were held off the board into the sixth in game two as pitching and defense once again proved to be the story.
Bekah Roth led off the top of the sixth and looked to be stranded there as the next two batters were retired, but
Jamie Fleischhacker came through with a clutch double to drive her in and give CU a 1-0 lead.
Cassie Bertelsen added an insurance run with a single to bring home Fleischhacker. It appeared that the Golden Bears were going to add another run on a double from Shinn, but an appeal on a runner missing third base ended the inning.
MSU Moorhead picked up a run to make it 2-1 in the bottom half and looked to be headed for more as they had the bases loaded with one out, but Heim stepped up and picked up back-to-back strikeouts to keep the lead.
She struck out the first two batters of the seventh and induced a ground out to close out her fourth consecutive complete game.
