CROOKSTON, Minn. – The Concordia University women's basketball team (19-7, 14-5 NSIC) had their eight game winning streak snapped in a dramatic 59-58 loss to Minnesota Crookston (10-13, 7-12 NSIC) on Friday night. The loss also snapped a 13 game winning streak over UMC as the Golden Bears fall to 21-5 all-time against the Golden Eagles.
Kionda Nicks had one of her best offensive games of the year with a season-high 14 points to go along with 11 rebounds and five blocks. The double-double was her second on the year.
On an off night shooting,
Anika Whiting still managed 12 points and seven rebounds.
Ameshia Kearney also contributed on the offensive end as she hit her first four shots of the game giving her 10 points in the first half and 12 in the game.
Katrina Moenkedick and Cienna Walker led the way for the Golden Eagles with 12 points each. Moenkedich completed the double-double with a game-high 13 boards.
After starting off 11-17 (64.7%) from the floor, the Golden Bears hit just 11-45 (24.4%) shots the rest of the night. CU, leading the nation with the fewest turnovers per game, turned it over 16 times but still managed to force 17.
The Golden Bears led for much of the first half but went into the break down a point at 34-33. Concordia pushed the lead out to as much as 10 at 26-16 at the 8:57 mark before the Golden Eagles stormed back. UMC used an 8-0 run to cut the lead to two at 26-24 before grabbing their first lead since the opening minutes at 32-31. The end result was an 18-7 run in favot of Crookston going into the break.
It was all Golden Eagles in the opening minutes as UMC pushed the lead out to 48-39 with 12:37 to play. Concordia responded with a momentum-shifting 13-0 run to regain the lead at 52-48. The run was highlighted by a clutch three from Whiting at the 9:27 mark to give CU their first lead of the half. A 7-2 run for the Golden Eagles, however, put the advantage back in UMC's favor at 55-54 with 5:21 remaining in the game. Whiting hit a free throw to pull the score even before a Christine Thorn bucket gave Crookston the lead back at 57-55. Both teams had a few empty trips in a row before Wolyniec buried a huge three with 1:29 left to give CU the lead back at 58-57. After a couple more scoreless possessions, Alexa Thielman hit a corner jumper with 14 seconds on the clock to give the Golden Eagles the deciding margin at 59-58. Kearney had a look from well beyond the arc as time expired but it fell short.
Concordia is back in action tomorrow night against the Bemidji State Beavers. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. The Golden Bears finish up their regular season slate next weekend at Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls.
