Concordia falls at Michigan Tech on Friday

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The #10 Concordia University women's basketball team (1-2) fell to Michigan Tech (2-0) 65-54 on Friday night. The Huskies led from start to finish on their home floor led by Danielle Blake's 23 points.
 
The Golden Bears shot 37.7% (23-61) as a team while they connected on just 2-8 from beyond the arc in the loss. The Huskies struggled even more from three as they were 2-13 but hit 41.9% (26-62) of their shots from the floor.
 
Michigan Tech won the rebounding battle by a margin of 41-35. Both teams did a nice job of taking care of the ball as CU had 10 turnovers and the Huskies had nine.
 
Ameshia Kearney led the Golden Bear attack with a team-high 15 points on 6-13 shooting as she added four rebounds and three assists. Anika Whiting chipped in 14 points and five boards in the loss. Mishayla Jones nearly picked up her first career double-double as she finished the night with 10 points and eight rebounds as well as a pair of steals.
 
Danielle Blake paced the Huskies with a game-high 23 points on 9-12 shooting along with nine rebounds. Jillian Ritchie added a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards as well for Michigan Tech.
 
The Huskies got off to a fast start with an 8-0 run to open up the game. They pushed the lead out to 12 at 26-14 with 9:58 to go in the opening half but Concordia was able to chip away before the break. The Golden Bears got it back below 10 with a Caitlyn Russell layup with 6:25 left in the half and shrunk the margin all the way to three following an 11-4 run to make it 34-31 with just over a minute and a half left in the first half. The two teams traded buckets at the end of the period to make it 36-33 in favor of Michigan Tech heading into the break.
 
An 11-4 run coming out of the locker rooms pushed the Husky lead back to double digits as they started to pull away. Concordia managed to get it back down to five with 11:18 remaining in the game at 49-44. The deficit remained at five with a score of 59-54 with just over four minutes to play but the Golden Bears were unable to pull any closer as the Huskies held CU scoreless the rest of the way and closed it out on a 6-0 run to bring it to a 65-54 final.
 
The Golden Bears are back in action on Sunday as they travel to Northern Michigan for a 1 p.m. game.
