ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (2-1) picked up a 108-59 victory over Crossroads College (1-6) in the Golden Bears' home opener at Gangelhoff Center on Wednesday night. Concordia's bench outscored the Knights roster by five (64-59) as redshirt freshman
Nuni Omot had 21 points and 12 rebounds while sophomore
James Healy dropped in 20 points including six three-pointers.
It was Concordia's first 100-point performance since a 109-104 triple overtime win over Southwest Minnesota State on February 13, 2010 at Gangelhoff Center, snapping a streak of 113 games without hitting the century mark. That season, the Golden Bears hit triple-digits three times, scoring 110 in the other two.
Omot had an impressive performance on 9-10 shooting from the floor as he primarily finished around the rim while his 12 rebounds were a game high and included four on the offensive glass. He added three assists, a block and a steal.
Omot sparked the Golden Bear bench effort in the first half with 18 of his 21 points as all 10 of his shots came in the opening frame. The Golden Bears led 55-28 at the break and pulled down more rebounds in the half (31) than Crossroads for the game (30). Adding to Omot's 12 rebounds, junior
Mike Yahnke had nine along with eight points and sophomore
Josh Monroy had eight rebounds including seven on the offensive end while scoring 14 points on 6-9 shooting.
Concordia would finish with 56 rebounds including 21 on the offensive end leading to a 29-9 edge in second chance scoring. The second chance points were part of a larger picture of inside dominance as Concordia outscored Crossroads 62-22 in the lane.
In the second half, it was Healy from long range that kept the offense rolling. After a 1-7 first half of shooting (1-6 from three-point range), Healy torched Crossroads for five second-half three-pointers in seven attempts and finished 7-15 from the floor for the night. The Golden Bears made a season-high 10 three-pointers in the game.
After a rough start to the year taking care of the ball with 18.0 turnovers per game entering play, Concordia turned it over just four times in the first half in building the big lead. For the night, the Golden Bears would win the turnover margin handily, forcing 22 and committing 13 for a 25-7 scoring margin off turnovers and 19-4 in the fastbreak.
Junior
Cole Olstad led the team with four steals defensively and scored 13 points including three three-pointers for the night. He also added four assists and turned it over only once.
Concordia's assist-to-turnover ratio was also impressive as the team dished out 30 assists for the game led by senior
Terez VanPelt's seven to just two turnovers. VanPelt's impressive streak of free throws made came to a close in the game as he missed his second attempt to snap the streak at 31.
Senior
Keith Crockett also had a strong night at the point with a 5-to-1 assist-turnover mark and junior forward
Shea Mandli had five assists without a turnover off the bench while adding 11 points on 5-6 shooting.
Adding to the team effort were seniors
Adam Petterson and
Jake Ruhland who each clocked career-high playing time. Petterson had eight points in 19 minutes while Ruhland had four points and three rebounds in 10 minutes.
For the third straight game, Concordia's defense held the opposition under 40 percent shooting as the Knights hit 32.8% (21-64) from the floor. No one reached double-digits for Crossroads as Rajohn Lewis and Michael Duncan each scored nine points while two others had eight. Duncan pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
