ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia University volleyball team (13-2, 6-1 NSIC) continued their strong play as of late with a sweep of Bemidji State (3-12, 1-5 NSIC) at the Gangelhoff Center on Friday night. The Golden Bears are now 7-0 on their home court on the season.
Anna Schlaak collected her third double-double of the season as she led the Golden Bears with 14 kills along with 17 digs.
Mariya Sampson was the only other Golden Bear to finish in double digits in kills with 12 kills and five digs.
Riley Hanson also added nine kills.
Kasey Williams finished with a match-high 41 assists along with six digs while
Taylor Dordan contributed a match-best 18 digs.
The team as a whole finished just just nine errors en route to a .342 hitting percentage in the win. They also won the battle at the net with 7.0 blocks compared to 3.0 for Bemidji State.
BSU was led by Chelsea Frison's eight kills and .400 hitting percentage despite hitting only .170 as a team. Kayla DeJong had 16 assists and Courtney Volkmann had six kills, 24 assists and seven digs as well.
The Golden Bears and Beavers traded points for the early part of the first set as the score remained tied at 8-8. Concordia slowly started to pull away with three straight points but Bemidji State fought hard to keep it within reach, not allowing the lead to grow larger than five until the 22-16 mark. CU then closed it out with three straight points to take the set 25-16. Sampson was the focal point of the offense with seven kills in the set.
The second set was all Golden Bears as CU scored the first five points and didn't look back. They scored six of the next eight to make it 11-2 and eventually pushed the lead to double digits at 16-6. The lead stayed pretty consistent the rest of the way as Concordia claimed the set 25-16.
Bemidji State came out of the intermission fired up as they built a five point lead at 11-6. They maintained that lead at 15-10 but the Golden Bears quickly erased it with a dominant 8-0 run to take an 18-15 lead. The Beavers battled back to regain the lead 20-19 but couldn't hang on as Concordia once again took the lead back with five points in a row. The Golden Bears closed out the sweep with a 25-21 set win in the 3
rd set to pick up their fifth consecutive sweep and sixth win in a row overall.
Concordia is back in action to wrap up the quick two-match homestand tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. against Minnesota Crookston.
