Second half run leads to 25-point exhibition victory

Concordia holds Saint John's scoreless for eight minutes in second half

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul outscored Saint John's 47-24 in the second half en route to an 83-58 exhibition victory on Wednesday night at Gangelhoff Center.

Concordia held the Johnnies scoreless for a big chunk of the second half, from the 17:48 mark to 9:47 to turn a 41-39 deficit into a 48-41 lead.

But the game-changing run was a 20-0 spurt at the seven minute mark that spanned just four and a half minutes.

Concordia dominated the glass with a 53-33 rebounding margin including 19-5 on the offensive boards leading to a 21-2 advantage in second chance scoring. Josh Monroy collected eight rebounds off the bench and had a pair of blocked shots, Shea Mandli had five offensive rebounds out of his six for the game and Nuni Omot had seven rebounds off the bench (three offensive).

Five players scored in double figures for Concordia led by Cole Olstad's 19 points. He hit three three-pointers and was 8-8 at the line to offset 4-14 shooting.

Concordia wasn't shooting in midseason form across the board, as the team shot 40.3% (27-67) from the floor, 35.3% (6-17) from the line and 63.9% (23-36) from the stripe. But the 36 free throw attempts still led to 23 points at the foul line.

Three players shot well for Concordia as Mike Yahnke was 6-8 for 14 points and nine rebounds, Jon Sobaski was 6-9 for 13 points with five rebounds and Terez VanPelt was 4-8 for 13 points and four rebounds.

James Healy added 12 points off the bench, knocking down a couple late three-pointers while hitting all six free throws.

Saint John's was led by Joe Risinger's 15 points while Alex Schmitt had 13 points with all of them coming in the first half.

Concordia held SJU to 35.6% (21-59) shooting including just 3-20 from the arc while limiting them to less than half of the free throw attempts as the Johnnies hit 13-17.

Concordia continues preseason action this Saturday at 6 p.m. for the alumni scrimmage.
