Concordia rallies for 65-57 win on the road over the Warriors

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia University women's basketball team (15-6, 10-4 NSIC) came from behind late to beat the Winona State Warriors (8-10, 4-10 NSIC) in Winona on Saturday afternoon.  The Golden Bears have now won four in a row and remain two games behind Wayne State for first place in the NSIC South.

The Golden Bears' hot shooting and advantage on the glass in the second half helped Concordia erase a five point deficit at the break and come out with their 10th conference win.  CU shot 44.4% from the floor in the second half after shooting 30.8% before the break and won the rebounding battle 20-14 in the final 20 minutes.

Carissa Wolyniec inched closer to the 1,000 point mark as she matched a game high with 17 points on 6-11 shooting.  She now stands 29 points shy of the mark after hitting 5-9 from beyond the arc in the game.

The Golden Bear offense was a balanced attack as all five starters scored at least eight points.  Anika Whiting nearly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine boards while Rachel Hansen scored 11 and picked up four rebounds and four steals.

The Warriors offense, on the other hand, wasn't quite as balanced as they received all but nine points from three players.  Connor Nagle had 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists to lead the Warriors.  Abby Busch and Kate Hartman chipped in 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Concordia built an early 19-13 lead but it quickly vanished as Winona State went on a 16-3 run to take a six point lead themselves at 29-22.  Hansen hit a pair of free throws to make it 29-24 going into the half.

The Warriors stretched it out to double digits early in the second half after four straight points from Nagle, but CU wouldn't go away.  The combination of Whiting and Wolyniec got the Golden Bears going as they pulled within one at 55-54 with 3:14 to go.  Ameshia Kearney took it from there as she buried a pair of threes on consecutive possessions to give Concordia their first lead since early in the first half at 60-57.  CU hit five free throws down the stretch to close out the win.

Concordia returns home for a four-game homestand to complete their regular season home slate starting next Friday.
