ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia University men's basketball team (5-13, 2-12 NSIC) couldn't overcome an incredible shooting performance by the Winona State Warriors (17-4, 12-2 NSIC) in an 80-61 loss on Saturday night.
The Warriors started off the game by hitting 13 of their first 14 shots to open the game to build a lead as large as 24 in the first half. They shot 75.0% (18-24) in the half overall compared to just 32.0% for the Golden Bears. CU was also outrebounded in the opening half 16-10 as they went into the break trailing 47-28.
The Golden Bears fought back in the second half, though, as they closed the gap to 53-43 with 13:13 to go in the game after a bucket from
Shea Mandli. They were unable to get any closer as they settled for a split on the weekend with an 80-61 loss.
Terez VanPelt and
Travon Mitchell were the only two players in double figures for Concordia as VanPelt poured in 18 points and Mitchell had 15. The two combined to hit 12-13 from the free throw line as CU shot 85.7% from the line as a team.
Another bright spot for Concordia came from
Clay Olstad. Olstad got the start and went 3-4 from beyond the arc to tie a career-high with nine points. He also chipped in two steals.
Riley Bambenek scored a game-high 20 points for Winona State on 7-11 from the floor and 4-4 from the free throw line to pace the offensive attack. Also chipping in, Taylor Cameron and Kellen Taylor both were a perfect 4-4 from the field. Taylor Cameron finished the night with 13 points, six assists and five rebounds while Kellen Taylor picked up a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.
Winona State finished the game with a shooting percentage of 65.9% in the game, easily the highest percentage given up by Concordia all year.Â
