Wolves' hot start sinks Golden Bears 83-75

ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Concordia University men's basketball team (4-10, 1-9 NSIC) couldn't overcome the red hot shooting of Northern State (12-4, 7-3 NSIC) in the first half in an 83-75 loss on Saturday night.

The Wolves jumped out to an early 15-4 lead and eventually pushed it out to 13 at 24-11 as they seemed to hit everything in the game's opening half.  They took a 43-31 advantage into the break as they hit an amazing 16-24 from the floor for a 66.7% mark.

Skye Warwick caught fire in the half with 12 points on 4-5 from distance and Seth Bachand shot 5-6 from the floor with 11 points to lead the Northern State charge in the first half.  Warwick and Bachand each finished with 14 points.

Terez VanPelt was aggressive early for CU, getting to the free throw line six times in the opening 20 minutes and led Concordia with nine points.

Concordia wouldn't roll over in the second half as they closed the margin to three at 69-66 with 3:31 to go and again at 73-70 with 1:11 left but they were unable to pull even or ahead.  Northern State iced it at the free throw line down the stretch to close out the 83-75 win.

Concordia improved their 37.9% shooting in the first half as they shot 48.4% from the floor as they closed the gap in the final 20 minutes.

VanPelt pulled within eight points of 1,000 in his career with 20 points tonight.  It was the third time in four games that VanPelt scored 20+ points as he hit 6-14 shots and 8-10 from the line and dished out five assists.

Mike Yahnke scored an efficient 14 points on 4-5 shooting and 5-6 from the stripe in just 20 minutes and Shea Mandli came off the bench to score 10 points and grab seven rebounds in the game.
