Golden Bear winning streak hits 11 with sweep of SCSU

PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia Golden Bears volleyball team (13-1, 5-0) extended its winning streak to 11 with a straight set win over St. Cloud State (8-5, 2-3 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon. Concordia also has won 19 straight against St. Cloud State and 19 straight in NSIC regular season play.  Concordia and Southwest Minnesota State stand as the only remaining unbeaten teams in conference play through two weeks.

Concordia came out the the first set and took care of business, using two 6-0 runs to take the first set 25-14.  The Golden Bears hit .385 as a team in the first and had no player with more than three kills through one.

In the second set CU appeared to be cruising to another set win, holding a 15-6 lead, before the Huskies fought to cut that lead to one at 23-22 to force a Concordia timeout.  The two teams split the next two points to set up an Erienne Lauersdorf (Watertown, Wis. ) kill to give the Golden Bears a tight 25-23 set win.  CU was uncharacteristically sloppy in the set with six attack errors but held SCSU to just .167 hitting in the set.

After the 10 minute break following the second set, the Golden Bears turned it on to close out the match with a 25-12 win in the third.  Concordia jumped out to an early 9-3 lead and didn't let the Huskies back within four for the rest of the set.  Concordia hit an impressive .441 compared to the Huskies .029 in the final set.

Freshman Riley Hanson (Nevis, Minn.) led the Golden Bears in kills for the match with 13 and was joined by Kayla Koenecke (Delano, Minn. ) in double digits with 10.  Koenecke leads CU with 3.47 kills per game on the season, followed by Hanson's 2.91.  Amanda Konetchy (Victoria, Minn. ) guided the Concordia offense with 43 assists and eight digs in the match.  Despite picking up only four kills, Emily McDonough (Stillwater, Minn. ) was active defensively for the Golden Bears, leading the team with 17 digs.

Concordia heads up north to take on Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State in NSIC action this coming weekend.  Friday's match against the Golden Eagles is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday's match against the Beavers starts at 4:00 p.m.
