Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia Golden Bears volleyball team (11-1, 3-0 NSIC) extended their winning streak to nine with a straight set win over the Minnesota State Mavericks (6-4, 2-1 NSIC) Tuesday night. CU also extended their conference regular season winning streak to 17. Sophomore
Heather Schiller (Coon Rapids, Minn.) set a career high with 15 kills.
Concordia stepped on the gas from the start of the first set, taking the lead at 3-2 and not falling behind the rest of the set. A 5-1 MSU run in the middle of the set cut the Golden Bear lead to 12-9 but wouldn't get any closer as CU went on to take the set 25-14. Schiller was fed the ball frequently in the first, finishing with seven kills on 12 attacks. No other Golden Bear had more than three kills in the set.
After giving up the first point in the second, Concordia used a 6-0 run to build a comfortable lead. A 6-1 Maverick run would get the score back to 11-9 but once again the comeback attempt fell short. Concordia cruised to a 25-17 set win. Concordia's offense was firing on all cylinders in the second set, hitting .500 as a team.
Minnesota State rallied in the third set, jumping out to a 4-1 lead looking to keep the match alive. Concordia chipped away before surging out to a six point lead after scoring eight straight to make it 12-6. The Mavericks were unable to recover as the Golden Bears closed out the match by winning the set 25-10. The Golden Bears hit an even more impressive .556 in the final set.
Schiller hit an efficient .600 for the match, finishing with 15 kills on 25 attempts with no errors. Senior
Erienne Lauersdorf (Watertown, Wis. ) joined Schiller in double figures with 11 kills. Although she was relatively quiet on the offensive end with five kills,
Kayla Koenecke (Delano, Minn. ) led the Golden Bears with 11 digs. Setter
Amanda Konetchy (Victoria, Minn. ) had a solid night with 37 assists and led an offense that hit .475 as a team.
Despite only hitting .179 as a team, Chandra Honebrink was impressive for the Mavericks with 11 kills on 17 attacks to finish with a hitting percentage of .647.
Concordia remains home for a huge weekend with conference foes #1 Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State. Friday night against the Bulldogs is "Roast the Dogs Night" and features the top two teams in the nation.
