ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia University volleyball team to set to begin NSIC conference action this week with a pair of matches against Upper Iowa (4-5) and Winona State (3-6). The Peacocks will be in town this Thursday to take on the Golden Bears at Gangelhoff Center at 7:00 p.m. Concordia then travels to Winona to take on the Warriors at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
The Golden Bears are a perfect 12-0 all-time against the Peacocks. Upper Iowa's last trip to St. Paul came back on October 7, 2011 with the Golden Bears picking up the sweep. Upper Iowa has only taken one set ever from CU. Upper Iowa played in the UW-Parkside this tournament and picked up one win in their four matches. After dropping both their matches on Friday to Indianapolis in five sets and Lewis in three sets they were able to bounce back and knock off Gannon University in their first match on Saturday. They would finish the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Wisconsin-Parkside.
Concordia has been extremely successful against the Warriors historically. CU has won 21 straight over WSU and 10 straight in Winona. Winona State is coming off playing in the Central Missouri Tournament last weekend in which they went 1-3. They split the first day, losing to Ferris State in four sets and beating McKendree 3-0. The second day was tougher as the Warriors dropped a five set match to Emporia State before being swept by Pittsburgh State.
Last weekend, Concordia won the Colorado Premier Challenge for the fourth time in eight years. Concordia has now won six matches against ranked opponents this season. In the tournament opener the Golden Bears took a straight set victory over Florida Southern (5-3). The second match of the day was another 3-0 victory over #15 Truman (5-3) to advance to the gold bracket on Saturday. In the semifinal match the Golden Bears came back after dropping the first set to knock off #11 Angelo State (6-2) in four sets. The championship match was the tenth meeting between CU and the #1 Tampa Spartans (7-1), with the Golden Bears taking the match in four sets.
