DENVER – The Concordia Golden Bears volleyball team (5-1) kicked off play in the Colorado Premier Challenge with a straight set win over Florida Southern (3-2) Friday afternoon. Concordia took the sets 25-21, 25-11 and 25-10. The Golden Bears are now 3-0 all-time against FSC.
CU returned All-American setter
Amanda Konetchy (Victoria, Minn. ) to the lineup and it didn't take long for the lineup to mesh with her back, with the team hitting .488 in the match.
In the first set, the Golden Bears weren't able to pull away from the Mocs with the teams trading points in the early going. Concordia went on a 7-1 run to turn a 13-13 score into a 20-14 advantage. Florida Southern trimmed the lead to 2 at 22-20 but CU shut the door and took the set 25-21.
Heather Schiller led CU with six kills on ten attempts in the set.
The second set was smooth sailing with Concordia jumping out to a 7-1 lead and winning 25-11.
The third set was much of the same with CU again scoring seven of the first eight points en route to a 25-10 set victory and a sweep of the match.
The Golden Bears showed their firepower in the final two sets of the match, hitting .577 in the second and .731 in the third as a team.
Riley Hanson (Nevis, Minn.) and
Erienne Lauersdorf (Watertown, Wis. ) both finished with an identical 11 kills and .588 attack percentages to pace the Golden Bears balanced attack.
Heather Schiller (Coon Rapids, Minn.) also finished in double digits in kills with 10. Konetchy nearly missed a double double in her return to the lineup with 35 assists and nine digs.
Concordia has another match tonight at 8:00 p.m. against #15 Truman State (3-1). Truman faces Florida Southern at 4:30 p.m. in their first match of the tournament.
