ROCHESTER, Minn. - The No. 8 seed Concordia-St. Paul softball season came to an end this afternoon with an
8-1 loss to the No. 3 seed Winona State (34-11) at the RCTC Dome in the NSIC Tournament. Concordia ends the year 29-16 overall.
The Warriors opened the game with a four run first inning and hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead.
Concordia got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning as the team put together a couple of late rallys in a comeback attempt.
Senior
Missie Feuerbach (Iowa City, Iowa) delivered a sacrifice fly to score freshman
Jamie Fleischhacker. Feuerbach had five of Concordia's eight RBI in the three games of the NSIC Tournament. She finishes the year with 33 RBI, just one shy of the team lead held by
Bekah Roth (Shoreview, Minn.) and
Brynn Larsen (Oconto Falls, Wis.).
WSU added an unearned run in the sixth inning to move the lead back to seven.
In the top of the seventh, Concordia loaded the bases with two outs but couldn't push a across another run.
The Golden Bears left six runners in scoring position and had another cut down between third and home.
The loss went to senior
Ashley Kluever (Cottage Grove, Minn.), finishing the year 18-10, working four innings and allowing seven runs. Sophomore
Stephanie Kappes (Circle Pines, Minn.) pitched the final two innings, allowing an unearned run.
Ashley Walker hit the three-run home run for the Warriors which was her 11th of the year. She went 2-4 with two runs and three RBI out of the third spot in the lineup while going the distance in the circle, allowing just one unearned run on five hits with five strikeouts to improve to 17-2 on the year. Her home run was the only extra base hit for either team on the day.
The Warriors advance in the elimination bracket and will play the Minot State / Minnesota State loser today at 6 p.m. in an elimination game.
